The Interrogators: Inside the Secret War Against al Qaeda
by Chris Mackey, Greg Miller

About the Author
Chris Mackey joined the army at seventeen and was assigned to the intelligence corps as an interrogator. After 9/11, he was recalled to the United States, assigned to Task Force 500, and subsequently sent to Kandahar, Afghanistan. He ultimately supervised all military interrogations conducted at the theatre-wide detention facility at Bagram airfield.
Greg Miller is a national correspondent for the Los Angeles Times.

Book Description
An unprecedented look at the front line of the war against terror: the inside story of five American interrogators, thousands of prisoners, and the race for the truth. More than 3,000 prisoners in the war on terrorism have been captured, held, and interrogated in Afghanistan alone. But no one knows what transpired in those interactions between prisoner and interrogator--until now.

In THE INTERROGATORS, Chris Mackey, the senior interrogator at Bagram Air Base and in Kandahar, where al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners were first detained and questioned, lifts the curtain. Soldiers specially trained in the art of interrogation went face-to-face with the enemy. These mental and psychological battles were as grueling, dramatic, and important as any in the war on terrorism. We learn how, under Mackey's command, his small group of "soldier spies" engineered a breakthrough in interrogation strategy, rewriting techniques and tactics grounded in the Cold War. Mackey reveals the tricks of the trade, and we see how his team--four men and one woman--responded to the pressure and the prisoners. By the time Mackey's group was finished, virtually no prisoner went unbroken.

Christopher Mackey, after completing his duty in Afghanistan, rejoined KPMG in Europe. Greg Miller is a national security correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. He lives in Washington, DC.

2. Yeah I'm pretty sure it "works,"
as far as getting a prisoner to talk. But what they say is probably not going to be that reliable, since they'll say anything at all to STOP THE FUCKING TORTURE.

4. wrong question
of course it works.

Every time I hear people discuss it in those terms, I think it's deliberately intended to make people think torture is a "necessary" evil, in order to protect the troops, or to protect us.

The fact is, international agreements protect our troops from being tortured themselves, and so the Bushies are putting them at greater risk.

8. It only works to pry out confessions
Historically, torture has been used only for punishment or to extract confessions - whether false or true didn't matter - torture does work to extract forced confessions.
But that's all it has ever proven effective for.

The trick is to torture the kids in front of their parents in order to get the parents to talk.

14. I saw that.
Blitzer was asking some hard questions for a change and then they abruptly ended the segment. I think a link to the transcript would help when they put it up. I want to make sure I really heard what I heard.

and he'll admit he's abusing his position as a "news" anchor to promote a RW political agenda.

I'll bring the wire cutters and the pliers. Who wants to bring the truck battery?

19. Even worse than that
I wish I had actually counted the number of times that Blitzer said these interrogations were "yielding valuable information..." In other words, go ahead, justify torture because we're safer if we torture others.........

to the intrepid NYT gal, Judith Miller. And I thought she was talking about the time she bedded down some Iraqi guy to get "information" about WMD's.And I thought Abu Ghraib was the worst torture I had read about!

27. " the art of gaining possibly life-saving information"
BLITZER: Now the new book "The Interrogators" goes inside an Afghan prison and tells the story of five Americans trained in the art of gaining possibly life-saving information from captured Taliban and al Qaeda members.

(snip)

BLITZER: All right, let's talk about the so-called ticking bomb scenario. You capture a Taliban or al Qaeda terrorist. You know they have information about some plot out there to kill Americans or friends. How far can you go in trying to get that information if you're one of the U.S. military interrogators?

(snip)

BLITZER: Based on what you learned -- and you spent a lot of time studying this -- do those methods work, something, not necessarily torture, but something close to torture, to you get the information that is really reliable?

(snip)

BLITZER: Because torture can be effective in certain cases. Is that what you're saying?
