John Kerry has taken a stand that will not allow me to vote for him.
His favorite film of last year was "Old School." I am deeply offended by this. The only candidate who shared my values and voted for Lord of the Rings, Wesley Clark, dropped out long ago.

Therefore, I must vote for the Green Party.

4. I'm talking about 2003.
But yeah, Spiderman-2 kicked ass and represented for the working class. When I vote for mayor of NYC next year, that will definitely determine my vote.

21. He's definitely an "ugly American."
He likes to travel around Europe with a giant American flag, talk polititical trash, and tell Europeans that if it weren't for the United States, they'd all together now be speaking German.

9. Lord of the Rings
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 05:31 PM by Kira
was so wonderful. I saw it as an anti war, pro environment movie. It was so moving. I loved it. Good against evil. It is very timely.

14. Oh really?
I don't know how I missed that stupidity. It is VERY obviously not that. I was so heartbroken when they were ripping up the trees and killing them. I also loved the part of the fire signals. When they were letting each other know all over the different landscapes that they were coming. It was so moving.

10. Wait - the AP probably misquoted him; Was the byline Nedra Pickler?
Were there a lot of references about the "Deluxe" box of popcorn Kerry ate at the showing, and the jewel-encrusted soft drink cup Teresa was using?

13. Todd Phillips. That's "Todd with two "d"s and Phillips with two "l"s"
Years ago I was listening to a show on CBC radio. It was shortly after GG Allin died. Todd Phillips had made a documentary about Allin as an NYU film student. The documentary became pretty popular after Allin died and so Phillips was getting a lot of publicity.

I remember the interviewer asking him what he wanted to do next and he said something about the porn industry. He'd already done some research and had been an extra in a porn movie. The interviewer was amused and said that if he ever wanted to do something more main-stream, it might hurt him if he had done work in the porn industry. He said that he's not appearing naked, but he's not at all worried about the publicity. In fact, he's like, "get my name right in the credits: it's "Todd with two "d"s and Phillips with two "l"s"

I laughed really hard when I heard that. When I saw Road Trip -- his first big commercial movie -- I laughed really hard again.

The Hobbits were probably too gay for him. Made him reflect upon his, ahem, identity.

18. I read an article recently arguing that LOTR's conservative impulse lies..
...in the way it portrays industrialization as evil and its idea of utopia is something much less industrialized.

This was the tension in the UK in 19th and 20th century. Industrialization was upsetting the old order and threatened to give workers more economic power. LOTR was a reaction to that.

I think there are things about LOTR that are also sort of liberal (or at least the movies have it). Nonetheless, the article I read was pretty intresting.

22. Tolkien hated machines more complicated than a screw or a pulley.
The ring was the ultimate machine, in his opinion.

But what Tolkien thought is hardly the point; it's what the reader thinks that counts when it comes to art.

Personally I thought the films sucked deluxe. Awful, awful things getting progressively worse as the series went on, though whether TTT or RotK was worse, it's so hard to say - they were both SO BAD.

Then again, I'm one of only 3 people on earth who think that Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings is an utter masterpiece. I don't know who the other guy is.

24. He was more of a Romantic.
He did have a hankering for things old and traditional.

LotR came out while modernist architecture and urban planning were wreaking havoc on urban communities.

I've often thought of Saruman from the films as kind of a Robert Moses character.
