you mean won by the largest margin, that would be Johnson/Humphrey in 1964.
IIRC they won largest % of the popular vote in American history.

I just mean which ticket was the "best" combo, with "best" being defined however one wants to define it.
Johnson/Humphrey won by a margin of 61%-38.5%. 61% remains the largest percentage of the popular vote ever received by a presidential ticket. But Roosevelt/Garner won 60.8%-36.5%, a slightly wider margin.

I really wasn't very excited by Gore in 2000, but I can't imagine anything that could have been done in between '92 and 2000 (eg, in terms of picking a new running mate in '96) which would have solved that problem.
