Immigration Reform - Canadians please participate

I was watching C-Span and some republican congressmen were talking about how much money goes toward illegal immigrants. I was wondering how other countries handle their immigration concerns, especially Canada, since I know they seem to have the best handle on their deficit (or lack thereof), while ours is skyrocketing with no end in sight.

Don't get me wrong, I still think we should cut the fraud-infested military budget down, and close loopholes for corporations and the rich so that we all pay our fair share, but it seems to me that giving some people a free ride just isn't fair.

So does anyone else agree with me that immigration reform should be on the table for Democrats? Something mentioned in the repub speeches was that a majority of the terrorists were here illegally because we have lax oversight of immigration, so it's not just about saving money for those that play by the rules.

1. Well we don't have a border with an impoverished country to

contend with. Illegal immgration could be quickly curtailed if the govt cracked down on companies that hired illegals and also addressed the economic situation in Mexico and Central America. As long as worse than slave conditions exist people will do anything to cross the border.

Plants closing, jobs not coming back. here in D/FW I'm used to seeing the employment section being so thick they have to divide it in two. Now lately, just as of this spring/summar I think, it's so small it's down to one thin section. This scares me a lot.

I agree those companies that want to pay slave wages should be prevented from doing so, or if they refuse then we should do what bush says and make them legal, and unionize them! Just screw the companies out of the profits they're unethically making... I wonder if Democratic candidates' positions might change on the issue. I honestly think that's why most politicians here don't do anything - because it's good for corporate profits.

7. Bush doesn't want make them legal. He I believe wants them

to be given a three year stay then sent back, entering in the future only as guest workers. The repuke goal is to break unions not encourage them. If you want some excellent analysis read Tom Frank's book "What's the Matter with Kansas."

10. Definitely. Paul Krugman has written a book called the

Unravelling of America. He argues that Republicans have sought since LBJ to dismantle all social safety nets, that means unions, minimun wage requirements, Social Security, Medicare. They shamelessly reveal this by giving enorous tax breaks to the wealthiest 1% of Americans and giving corpoations tax incentives to outsource jobs.

Caller talked about how Smedley Butler was encouraged by some corporation (I think, don't remember it exactly) to be a dictator.

2. Canada deports illegal immigrants ASAP

Unless your life is at threat they will deport you to your home country ASAP, even if you have kids born in Canada.

4. That's what I thought

I had wondered if I would be prevented from going over there illegally. I took the test and don't qualify for the skilled worker thing, and with the nazi comparisons and unending war... I'm not sure I want to stay here if bush steals it again.

5. Just a question.

I knew many people of European background who entered this country illegally through Canada, either from Toronto or Vancouver. Many managed to get their green cards eventually through various means including a couple of amnesties the American government offered.

Now I don't know if they were illegal in Canada as well or legal at the time. So do you have any explanation for this? I do know because they were white and English speaking our "migra" wasn't as hot on hunting them down as our poor neighbors from the south.

Also, if the situation had been reversed and we had been leaking illegals into Canada instead of the other way around how would it be handled?
