8. This reminds me of something

last year my daughter's third grade teacher tried to tell her class bush was born in Texas. My daughter said no, I think he was born in Connecticut. The teacher told her she was wrong he was BORN IN TEXAS. My daughter, never one to be shy, insisted he was from Connecticut. She even offered to look it up on the internet for the teacher, who said it wasn't necessary, as she KNEW he was born in Texas.

My daughter came home that afternoon pretty steamed and we looked it up on the official White House website. It's pretty hard to find, but there it was: Connecticut as place of birth. She printed that page and took it to school.

Good girl. She doesn't like misinformation or lies.

I thought you were a teacher yourself? You should have a word with your daughter's teacher. It is TERRIBLE for teachers to not allow themselves to be proven wrong by a bright and/or enterprising student. That teacher, for the sake of their own pride (and their Bush worship in this case) would be willing to squash the inquisitiveness of a young mind.

The best teachers, even Nobel laureates (ESPECIALLY the best teachers) are ALWAYS willing to be shown wrong and corrected. They might actually learn something from their student in this way!

and believe me she and I went ROUND and round last year, especially when my daughter got the bright idea that she didn't want to say the Pledge of Allegiance anymore. Her teacher is a Baptist bush supporter who isn't real big on separation of church and state.

I had to learn her teacher a thing or two. It wasn't pretty at times, but it did get better.

Teacher seemed a bit too proud for that. Definitely no encouraging critical thinking in that class, which got me angrier than the fact that the teacher tried to slip her social issue positions in all the time. Thank goodness we teach our daughter to think for herself plenty at home.

When they were reading a current events thingie and it mentioned the cost of the war in Iraq, my daughter brought up the fact that she and her peers would be paying for it for a long time, her teacher said "No you won't!" then my daughter said, "Yes, we will! It was borrowed from the Social Security trust fund and has to be paid back with interest. It'll take years and years. MY kids might still be paying on it!"

The teacher changed the subject.

Then there were the poll questions she posed to her peers during recess (who are your parents voting for being the most popular question with gay marriage being the second, did I mention we live in suburban Dallas? LOL! She was making progressives of ALL those kids...)

Then there was the collage she made with Kerry in a military uniform and bush's head on a ballerina body. Oh my. Teacher said that was inappropriate.

So she cut out a picture of a donkey and an elephant head that she put on the top of a ballerina body.

This girl's gonna be the first female US president, Democrat of course. Look for it. She's nine now.

Back in 1990, no one thought of him as Texan. He was a prep school kid with an Ivy League accent who barely spent any time in Texas, and he had a father who rarely came to Texas. Bush Daddy's home in Texas was listed as a hotel room in Houston, and he mainly kept that address to avoid paying state income taxes.

Bush didn't run in 1990, but he went out and bought the Texas Rangers, and for the next couple of years did photo ops for Texas Magazine wearing boots and trying to say Y'all (hi VelmaD!). He talked about barbeques and Texas thangs. Then his father lost and moved to Texas, and built his library here, and started pretending he was Texan, too.

Meanwhile, Ann Richards took over a state on the verge of bankruptcy, in decline economically from the Reagan Error. She turned it around, brought the budget under control, brought new business to the state, invested in its future, improved education, brought crime down-- all the normal things Democrats do when they take office. With her success she brought in a lot of new companies, especially from California and Boston, where the economies were even worse.

These newcomers didn't know what she had done, but had heard the name George Bush because of the former president. At that time Clinton's approval was in the mid thirty's and Gingrich was running around screaming "Throw them all out." Bush's gubernatorial campaign theme, and about the only thing he said the whole time he was running (and btw, when he said it he sounded more like a New Englander than whatever he sounds like now) was "Vote for me because Ann Richards likes Bill Clinton."

It worked. The newcomers helped tipped the balance. But until that election, no one thought if W as a Texan, and the ones who most thought of him as a Texan were outsiders. Bush tries very hard to hide where he is really from.

Could the ManChimp be a foreign plant who's been secretly programmed to take the place of the real George Bush, to infiltrate the Presidency and undermine the United States? Of course I'm joking, but it would be interesting to get video footage of George Bush when he was younger. Others have noted that a brief section of F 911 shows a younger George Bush with better speaking skills than those he displays today.

from here (TX where I now live), but spent enough time working with people from TX and OK in the military and now living and working among TX natives, the Southwestern accent is distinctive.
