Ohio Voter Purge --by Steven Monroe

I noticed that one of the most critical counties in President Bush's re-selection efforts in Ohio, Hamilton County (Cincinnati), had a dramatic decrease in the voter rolls. It went from over 585,000 in 2000 to 519,048 today. I sent an email to the elections board in Hamilton County and received the following explanation for the decrease.

Note that over 105,000 voters were purged because they had not voted in 4 years, including 2 federal election cycles.

In 2000, 11,651 registrations were canceled because of move out of the county, death or felony conviction.

In 2001, 22,157 registrations were canceled because of move out of the county, death or felony conviction. 70,804 registrations were canceled because of inactivity (not voting in four years including two federal elections).

In 2002, 19,126 registrations were canceled because of move out of the county, death or felony conviction. 949 registrations were canceled because of inactivity.

In 2003, 12,525 registrations were canceled because of move out of the county, death or felony conviction. 35,824 registrations were canceled because of inactivity.

In 2004, 4,560 registrations were canceled because of move out of the county, death or felony conviction (as of June 30).

I'm bringing this to Citizens for Legitimate Government's attention, not because I believe something is necessarily wrong, but because I thought it might already have resources in Ohio who know what is right or wrong. I don't know if this is an issue or not because I don't know what the rules are in Ohio (I'm from NY.) I also don't know what the checks and balances are in Ohio for allowing a bipartisan review of the purges to make sure they are accurate and comport to the law.

If 110,000 voters can be purged from the rolls in one critical county, how many were purged in the other 87 Ohio counties since the 2000 election? Are the same tests used in every other county? Who has access to the list of purged names? What percentage were black or Hispanic? How do they match the felony conviction to the registered voter?

7. I think it's because the post was made...
with a bracket instead of a parentheses, as the HTML code for DU (already) utilizes brackets for their code. All the original poster has to do is to switch the brackets w. parentheses.

8. Isn't Hamilton County a rural area with a university?
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 10:43 PM by JDPriestly
Sounds like they are purging a lot of voters. Are some of them students who have moved away?

10. Hamilton County is Cincinnati and the suburbs around it.
Cincinnati is not as strong a Republican area as the surrounding suburbs are.

12. Per Cincinnati Enquirer Hamilton County has lost
population over the last 5 years. According to the census results Hamilton County Ohio has lost more population than any other county in the state. In was somewhere in the 10% range which could account for the decrease in voter rolls.
