"The human chauvinism that has so narrowed our vision . . .
that we can talk of 'nuclear survival' and spend a million dollars per minute on weapons of cosmic destruction must cease. It is religion's task to reintroduce a cosmic vision, a less arrogant and less humanly chauvinistic way of seeing our world. It is also religion's task to motivate for discipline and sacrifice, for the deep letting go of which humans are capable. Today it is more and more evident that the time has come for humanity to let go of war, to admit that it has outgrown war, and to move beyond war as a way of settling differences. Just as humanity one hundred years ago outlawed slavery, so it is capable of outlawing war." Matthew Fox, Original Blessing, 1983

I've always loved Matthew Fox's theology and this quote in particular . . . among his many works, this one is probably his most influential . . . check it out if you'd like a different way of looking at religion, and its relationship to science . . .

1. Interesting
Humanists have long championed environmental responsibility, and have pointed out how closely connected we are to the rest of creation (instead of divinely seperated from it). IMO, human chauvanism is propagated mainly by religions that seperate us from nature.

I think Christian Humanism has more to offer people who are interested in Fox's book.
