A war with Iran is a sure recipe for the draft
This 9/11 Commission report that is coming out will stipulate that Iran both had ties to and gave aid and comfort to Al Qaeda. It could be the catalyst that rallies public sentiment--at least among Republicans and dingbat swing voters--in favor of a war with Iran. Of course, it won't happen overnight, nor will it happen before the election. If you remember, it took some time for the Bush Team to sell the American people on a war with Iraq. As I remember, they started talking up the war in August of 2002, 7 months before the shooting started. This 9/11 Commission report could start that process over again, that is, to make Iran war number 3. If Bush is elected he will surely interpret that as a mandate for his preemptive foreign policy and war with Iran will be even more likely. Then the official denials about the draft will cease, a dramatic US troop buildup along the Iran/Iraq border will commence and this Congress will enact a draft, a Republican draft, meaning no women (the Family Research Council types never much liked the idea of women in the military), and lots of creative loopholes for the sons of corporate executive to weasel out. By my estimation, a war with Iran would start sometime in the Spring about the same time those infamous "Greetings" letters start arriving in young men's mailboxes. Conscripts would likely be used as replacement soldiers in Iraq as the more professional troops would be sent to Iran. I also think that some conscripts might be sent to Korea to replace forces there, as the Pentagon will transfer some of those forces to the war in Iran.

2. Do you think Congress will go along again?
Wagging their little tails? Or do you think they'll fight it? Or will Chimpy just declare himself Imperial Hand of God?

4. Maybe, maybe not
But even if he lost a congressional vote Bush could just say he is acting in the interests of "national security" and that he is not bound by a congressional vote. In any event, that's why he and his people will spend months talking up a war with Iran. An extensive and protracted PR campaign lasting many months can sway a lot of people.
