Touré - VOTE or DIE.
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 02:08 AM by VolcanoJen
So, it's going on 18 hours since I first saw it, but it's still with me. It hasn't left me all day.

Early Monday morning, while watching CNN's "American Morning," Touré, an editor at Rolling Stone Magazine, appeared in his usual spot for the pop-culture "news" segment,"90 Second Pop."

As the segment ended, that curmudgeon (putting it mildly) Jack Cafferty asked Touré what his shirt said. He pulled apart the lapels to his smart blazer to reveal a shirt that read, simply, "VOTE or DIE."

While the CNN anchor-zombies giggled, I found this to be a bold, patriotic display of love for his country and the democratic process, so much so that I'm still thinking about it, almost a full day later.

How long before he's Dixie Chick'd?

1. A truer statement to a future draftee ...
Vote Kerry or Die.

2. If he had stated "Vote Kerry or Die"...
... the message would have been lost in the negative spin, yes?

"VOTE or DIE" really drives it home, no matter what side you're on. I was incredibly proud of his willingness to send everyone a message, and in a studied, non-political way.

We all got it, I hope... :-)

4. It's the best slogan I can think of.
That's precisely why I can't get it out of my head.

6. What do I say to my friends
Who don't care or think politics is rigged against the "common man" and voting is futile?

I told a Nader freak that if he wanted to prevent Bush from killing even more people, a vote for Kerry was the way to go. He said he'd think about it.

The bartender and a friend just plain old don't care ... my line indeed used to be "Voting only encourages them" ...

8. Tell them to think.
Tell them to examine what they know about the world and ask themselves if it really doesn't matter who who gets elected president, senator, representative. Based not on their ideas or ideals, but their experiences.

11. They're only interested in insular experience
For example, one of my friends doesn't even care about leaving her apartment unless people are going to watch her perform on stage. What happens to her neighbors down the hall is of no importance to her. She dislikes her family, so doesn't even care about them.

Maybe she's an extreme example, but lots of people only think about what happens at work, in their family and among close friends. Like, heck, I'd have had no idea Bush is building up the deficit while tearing down the scraps of goodwill the world has left for us. How do you make people realize they are being affected by Bush as President when they don't look past their noses?

13. There will always be some who are unwilling to think or change.
That's human nature.

tell them that Bush is ready to draft them within four months of winning the 2004 election, and that Canada and college will not be options. This is a partisan effort? Yeah, right.

7. Ooooh! P Diddy wore a similar shirt at the NAACP Convention!
According to this rather snarky article, anyway:

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/opinion/9167421.htm

That message wasn't lost on the NAACP this week. Sean "P. Ddiddy" Combs showed up at the convention center wearing a "vote or die" T-shirt. Hard to beat a rapper for a clear message.

12. The official slogan of "Citizen Change"

http://www.citizenchange.com

"Citizen Change is a non-partisan, non-profit organization with a mission to educate, motivate and empower millions of young Americans to access their power and vote on November 2nd."

Apparently started by P. Diddy, there is no merchandise page up yet....

14. P. Diddy had the same T-shirt at a largely Repub voter registration bash.
Sean "Puffy" Combs has been trying to get out the MTV vote this year- he's been barnstorming voter registration drives for both Democrats and Republicans, and he's reportedly been wearing the same T-shirt.

A Bush victory could very well have young people ducking bullets in the Middle East by next spring. Fourteen permanent military bases aren't being built in Iraq just to give the mercencaries exercise. Don't you think that P. Diddy realizes how bad that would be for business?
