Unusual platform ruffles GOP

THE HORROR of it all: Democrats are refusing to campaign the way Democrats usually campaign.

This tactic annoys Ed Gillespie, chairman of the Republican National Committee. During a Monday morning conference call with reporters, Gillespie complained that the Democratic Party platform is "designed to disguise" Senator John Kerry's "out-of-mainstream voting record."

What really frustrates the GOP is what Democrats left out of the party platform, or issues document. For example, it does not label the Iraq invasion "a mistake" and does not establish a publicly announced timeline for the withdrawal of US troops. It does not call for specific changes in the Patriot Act. It calls for "full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation," criticizes Bush for pushing a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of a man and woman, but leaves the issue of marriage to be decided at the state level.

The record pits a United States senator with a mostly liberal voting record against an incumbent president with a record measured mostly by the casualties of war. Voters will decide what matters more.

Nice opinion piece that highlights how Kerry/Edwards are running smart - leaving the republicans to look for invisible ink to make their case.

1. I love that "out of the mainstream"...
... meme. Kerry should toss that one right back in their faces.

We think that going to war over false pretenses is "out of the mainstream".

We think that tax cuts that benefit only the rich are "out of the mainstream".

We think that the banning of stem cell research for religious reasons is "out of the mainstream".

We think a president who cannot and will not hold a real press conference is "out of the mainstream".

You get the picture :)

2. "Teresa and John are going to get invited to a fancy dinner in France"
Oh god, how lame, more France baiting :eyes: The Republicans have nothing to run on and are resorting to their same old tactics, and are pissed that the Dems are fighting back for once. All I can say is, it's about time! :D

5. My God! It's a platform that reflects...the mainstream.
No wonder poor crybaby Ed doesn't like it. :-)

7. Gillespie's name should never
be mentioned by the Kerry Edwards campaign without adding "the former ENRON lobbyist".

8. Of course calling the Iraq war a mistake would increase their credibility
Anyone with a brain knows it was a mistake. Nothing wrong with taking a stand.

9. Platform Shmatform, I thought...
Witness the GOP's long-standing refusal to stand behind the inevitable Human Life Amendment Plank of their platform.. you know, the one that would turn the birth control pill into a controlled substance (or a murder weapon)... For the past decade, at least, they've run as fast as they could from that turd in the general election, while keeping it in there to make the christian reconstructionist loonies happy.

Anyway, this is just more proof that they can't, for the life of them, come up with anything of substance to run on. Witness the "Kerry and Edwards are gay" nonsense.
