What's up with this Sandy Berger business?
all the ditto-monkeys here at work are at a fever pitch over this. Here's an example
<snip>What the heck is this guy doing? Does this mean the 9-11 Commission didn't receive all pertinent information of the terrorist threats and strategies from the Clinton Administration? If they did then why did Berger have to "inadvertantly" steal the documents? or Was this a "CYA" because maybe Berger (or better yet, President Clinton) wasn't so truthful or forthcoming to the 9-11 Commission. Did they lie? What did they know and when did they know it? Time to call the special prosecutor. I wonder what Ken Starr is doing these days? </snip>

andy help in shutting them up is appreciated.

2. CNN OR MSNBC
reported ( I can't be sure which station I had on at the time) this am that they were COPIES of papers and that nothing "really" is missing, just copies.

4. Yeah, he's most likely only in trouble for
mishandling classified documents...I don't think he was trying to hide anything from the commission.

I didn't see anything about sock-stuffing though.

23. Heard on the radio this morning in DC
that Berger admitted it and was cooperating with the FBI according to an FBI spokesman. Don't know if it is 100% accurate; I hope not.

10. DavidGergen blew it out of the water on the Today Show
He said that close associates of Bergers told him the exact same thing. It was copies and the 9/11 commission had everything they needed AND the originals are still at the archives.

Couric asked if it was simply a diversion from the report to be released this week and Gergen said that the timing was "suspicious".

be fined for this. He may lose his security clearances as well, though.

3. Ken Starr is still out whoring for the Republican party
same as the old days. I find it extremely telling your office mates are thinking of special prosecutors for Clinton again and completely choose to ignore the myriad of sins of GWB* and fiends.

6. It's a fishing expedition dredged up to distract from the coming Plame...
... indictments.

This is what they'll say:
"So what if the Vice President's Chief of Staff has been indicted. Clinton's National Security Adviser is also under investigation by the Justice Department!"

The current accusations against Berger will likely get forgotten in the coming months and produce nothing (although with it being Bush's Justice Dept., I'm not so sure). But the important thing is the timing. The Plame indictments are going to be announced very soon, by all accounts. If this is in the news at the same time, it will have the effect of dulling the impact of the Plame indictments in most voters' mines: "Oh well, I guess they're all corrupt."

Goebbels would be jealous of this bunch.

8. Cheney has not released Energy meeting papers for almost 3 years
But Berger has copies of sensitive documents and the GOP wants him prosecuted.

Sure, it is okay that we stumble around in blackouts and pay four times as much for electricity while Energy traders make crude jokes about us little people. But let a Democrat get near a xerox machine and the GOP is ready to cut off heads.

I'd love to see the Repubs try to make a case out of this. Cheney's energy papers will be thrown back in their faces so fast it'll give them whiplash.

This will soon be swept under the proverbial cabinet and some GOP story will also disappear. This is their chance to buy some forgiveness, so to speak.

I've heard this reported on the radio three times already with the clear implication that Berger admitted stuffing the papers in his pants. Anybody know what really happened?

32. Berger was just a shade too literal-minded
He had heard someone describe the documents as 'CYA' memos and that's why he though he should stuff them down his pants. He was literally trying to cover his ...... with them.

Yep, it's the Berger Time Bomb, in fact. Timed just before the 9/11 report and the imminent release of the Plame indictments. Watch out any high-profile Dems. You are prime target to become chopped liver in the RWing meat grinder. Ack! :puke:

29. LINK to video
Link to MSNBC already on Gergen's own website
http://www.davidgergen.com/index.php?page=appearances&item=512

"..more innocent than it looks..."

"..one of the heroes of the war on terror..."

"copies...of internal documents..after action review of the millennium....self assessment"

"investigations started MONTHS ago...he hasn't heard from them in WEEKS"

"suspicious to some of his colleagues"

"not clear the investigation is still underway"

Distractioin?---"it has those overtones"

He went on to say that the Washington Post does not have this on the front page so how the media covers it will decide how much it matters but added that if Berger had to leave the Kerry campaign that would harm their preperation, as he has been an integral part of formulating their national security policy, at this point.

Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 01:37 PM by Yupster
it's not going to be a big deal in the end,

nut,

certainly of anyone in America, Sandy Berger knew better than to take any classified documents. There's not any excuse for it and there needs to be some punishment.

I read in USA Today today that there's still a few things missing which he inadvertantly threw in the garbage. Sorry Sandy, no matter what they were, we can't have classified stuff being thrown out in your local garbage. If you take the stuff, at least take care of it.
