So now the morning freeper Dave Skylar is railing against Ronstandt
Unfortunately we have no morning radio here in Oro Valley (near Tucson, Az) other than freeper radio starting with this guy Dave Skylar (then comes Rush, Dr. Laura, Savage, Hannity ect)

So this guy Skylar is now gleefully talking about how Linda was booed off the stage and how it just shows how unpopular Moore really is blah blah.

First off I'm impressed she had the guts to do this in Vegas which last I checked isn't exactly a liberal state, so it's to no surprise that the rubes there booed her and threw cocktails in the air.

Then I guess she is now banned from the Aladdin hotel.

To my knowledge she makes her home right here in Tucson.

Well I'm proud of her personally.

2. Free
enterprise....private property. It has nothing to do with free speech. Come on now, you guys! She was hired to serve...did a "bad" job according to her employer and was let go. She can say it all she wants but needs to do it in appropriate forums. Am I completely wrong about this? *don't hurt me*

7. I still
don't see how I am completely wrong. Regardless of what I think of her comments, she was hired to sing...it was not a political rally. She caused a near riot (which is a silly thing, in and of itself). Really, for her safety, it was a good thing they kicked her out. Who knows what might have happened if she'd stayed?

4. She wasn't really "let go"
It was a one-night gig on her latest tour. Apparently she didn't get to stay in the hotel that night, but she's hardly lacking in resources.

I doubt she'll regret crossing that particular dive off her list of venues.

Apparently an audience of yokels is an inappropriate forum. That's their loss. Too bad they couldn't get into the Wayne Newton show that night.

10. I'm
happy to be here. I enjoy a variety of opinions on lots of topics and know which web site you are referring to. I'm trying to look at this without emotional attachment. I see "wackos" on both sides of the political forum and am trying not to get caught up in the free for all...want to look at facts...all sides of them..and form my own opinion. Great country we live in that allows us to do that, isn't it?

12. Welcome to DU samiam1972
:bounce: :toast: :bounce:

I agree with you. Everyone is within their rights here. Linda knew the consequences of her actions and I seriously doubt she's singing, "Poor Poor Pitiful Me" right now--if anything it's a testament to her that she's willing to jeopardize her career to speak out for what she believes in.

16. I'm not
here on a bet from anyone. On my own here...apparantly venturing into unwanted territory. I read the "near riot" comment from the article I read after googling it. Don't remember which news website I read the article from...sorry. I'll do better next time with my resources. I read from all kinds of news websites so don't always remember exactly which one I was on.

19. every entertainer does some patter between songs..I've never
heard of one being censored before ??..come on you know if she had got up there and said 'support our President and our boys in the army' like some diphead Britney they would have cheered.

They paid their money to hear her sing not censor her thoughts.

23. so she's fired for an opinion, while the wingnuts that destroy property
have nothing done to them.

Just remember bushworld 1984

war is peace
occupation is freedom
full sovereignty is partial sovereignty

and now....

praising a movie producer gets you fired...

destroying property and disorderly conduct for disagreeing with it as it supports bushworld is OK.

Yes, sure this is fine. /sarcasm

8. Don't worry about Ms. Linda.
I've been listening to her for close to 30 years now. This is the first time I've ever heard tell of that person Skylar. Ronstadt's music, varied as it is, will outlast any cookie-cutter right-wing radio outfit.

9. I'm very suspicious of this story. I'd like to know how many walked.
I'd like to know how many posters were torn down. How many drinks were tossed. Not a fucking fact has been delivered in this story. I tend to think that Lindas' audience would be just a bit more liberal than this story lets on.

11. Shades of the "Brooks Brothers" riots
in Florida during the 2000 coup?

Yeah, I wondered that myself. We can thank the "librul media" for magnifying whatever actually happened (one drunk freeper, perhaps?) into a groundswell against speaking out against the president.

show there, I heard on TV. She wanted to go out with a bang.

Mission accomplished.

18. I'm torn on this one
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 09:49 AM by Beware the Beast Man
I honestly don't believe the media reports on this situation. They make it sound like a mob scene, when it was probably a mixed crowd of boos, cheers, and walk-outs. I also don't think she was wrong for stating her opinion. Heaven forbid we should have diverging viewpoints in this country.
On the flip side, though, I really see this less as a 1st Amendment issue, and more as if the proprietor of the Aladdin was trying to cover his ass by cancelling her engagement. Is this right? Absolutely not. But if it was the last night of her performance, then they could have at least let her stay in the room one more night.

EDIT-point is, if the reports of the crowd hysteria are correct, then she had to have known what kind of crowd she was working.

has to put their ideals or thoughts aside in the workplace or anywere else.
This is an outrageous act by the Hotel..censoring a singer for her beliefs.
This is no different from a worker at McDonalds stating they don't support Bush and getting sacked for it.

Just because it's a highly paid entertainer it makes no difference ..blatant cenorship and restraint of trade for her beliefs !!
there is no middle ground on this one..

Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 10:45 AM by Beware the Beast Man
On her last night, nonetheless. Had she been forced to sign a contract stipulating that she would not discuss certain topics on stage (like politics), then that would be censorship. She spoke her mind, and got it out, which was my point. Unfortunatley, the numbnuts owner decided to can her for it. Unfair? Yes. Censorship? No, but it walks the fine line, definitely.

28. On the contrary..it sends a signal that to say what you think means
dismissal..no matter if your'e a big star or an office worker..you know as well as me if she praised the President it would not have happened..there are many ways to censor and this is just one more..if she had accepted and signed a contract ( no would could force her..she has a choice)it would be a different matter.

This is along the lines of removing people from malls or Bush rallies were anti-Bush t-shirts..

There is no defence to this..just spin.

22. I'm a Tucsonan...who the hell is Dave Skylar????
For anyone that has lived in Arizona for any lenght of time knows that Linda comes from an Arizona pioneer family...well known for her participation in the annual Tucson Mariachi competition, which is a major event that draws people from around the world, and overflows the hotels and restaurants throughout the area. They would also be aware that Linda has always been an activist and always said what was on her mind and in her heart. Why would this Skylar guy who is the voice....rightwing tho it is....not be more knowledgeable about Linda? That's the wacky wingnuts....SHUT UP, JUST SHUT UP.

27. You gotta be up early to hear his show
He's on from like 6-9 am then Rush comes on.

He's not really a right wing talk show host but he spends at least a half hour a day stumping for Bush and bashing Kerry and Edwards and is so terrible at arguing against them that it's laughable. He's still pushing the whole "but Kerry flip flops wah wah wah"!

Still though today he blasts Linda and says "you know I am so sick of getting political commentary from entertainers ya know?"

Newsflash Davey boy YOU ARE NOTHING BUT AN ENTERTAINER AND YOU ARE GUILTY OF THE SAME ACCUSATION YOU BESTOW UPON OTHER ENTERTAINERS WHO EXPRESS THEIR POLITICAL VIEWS.

He's kind of a dick, but he has a more moderate view and more moderate guests... he's also endorsing Kerry.

Otherwise give sports talk radio a listen.
