Reporter alleges sodomy at Abu Ghraib
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 10:42 AM by NightOwwl
Seymour Hersh charges published in Washington Times. WATimes is well known for it's slant towards the right.

The media had better not let this drop through the cracks.

Link fixed

1. Well, considering that that was published 3 days ago
I'm afraid they're all ignoring it and allowing it to drop quickly down the memoryhole.

Once Sy publishes the story, though...

7. Anybody have a link
or a thread that can prove that a lot of these prisoners are innocent and did not try and kill American soldiers? I know the red cross did a study on this, but I can't find it. I am unable to use the search function on this site for some reason.

9. My pleasure - "Torture at Abu Ghraib"

TORTURE AT ABU GHRAIB
by SEYMOUR M. HERSH

(snip)

Most of the prisoners, however—by the fall there were several thousand, including women and teen-agers—were civilians, many of whom had been picked up in random military sweeps and at highway checkpoints. They fell into three loosely defined categories: common criminals; security detainees suspected of “crimes against the coalition”; and a small number of suspected “high-value” leaders of the insurgency against the coalition forces.

----------------

However this piece alleges the innocent were freed before they could be tortured. You know the reich-wing will seize on this as evidence no innocents were harmed, just like they insist no innocents are ever victims of the death penalty. Pravda anyone?

‘It Was Disgusting’
Former Iraqi Prisoners Recount Mistreatment by U.S. Soldiers

(snip)

Most of the prisoners detained at Abu Ghraib who are picked up in random military sweeps turn out to be innocent. They are released within three months and given $10 as spending money.

But some of those who were charged with insurgency and held longer told ABCNEWS they were subjected to lengthy interrogations, torture, and humiliation.

----------------

The best I've found yet, because it directly contradicts the pravda pablem that ABC whorishly included in their piece:

Private contractor lifts the lid on systematic failures at Abu Ghraib jail

Julian Borger in Washington
Friday May 7, 2004

The Guardian

(snip)

Many of the prisoners abused at the Abu Ghraib prison were innocent Iraqis picked up at random by US troops, and incarcerated by under-qualified intelligence officers, a former US interrogator from the notorious jail told the Guardian.

(snip)

He claimed that "many of the detainees at the prison are actually innocent of any acts against the coalition and are being held until the bureaucracy there can go through their cases and verify their need to be released."

(snip)

"I've read reports from capturing units where the capturing unit wrote, "the target was not at home. The neighbour came out to see what was going on and we grabbed him," he said.

According to Mr Nelson's account, the victims' very innocence made them more likely to be abused, because interrogators refused to believe they could have been picked up on such arbitrary grounds.

8. Sy won't let this story drop off the radar.
I think he's pretty good with his timing when releasing his stories. Maybe some will be published just before the Pub Convention???

I'm glad to see the Dems finally figured out how this game is being played.

10. Don't even joke about that shit
What you're saying is revolting in the extreme.

Holding back information that could prevent more crimes being committed if it's ready to go to press is in itself criminal.

I'm sure he's vetting the story, or the publisher is getting their legal ducks in a row.

To imply they're just sitting on it for political reasons is reckless and ignorant.

12. There's been enough info outed already to stop the crimes.
Hersh said it himself that we will just have to wait until he reports on the information he has.

You are mis-interpreting my comments. Of coursee no reporter should ever hold back a story that could prevent crimes or disasters from happening. That's not what's happening here! The main story is out, and I doubt even THIS admin. would take any more chances NOW!

I think the timing of ADDITIONAL INFORMATION is the right thing to do.

13. Sorry to jump down your throat
When I saw your post I had visions of blurbs all over the reich-wing media accusing Hersh of all kinds of crap. They did it to Mike, so I don't think for one second they'd hesistate to try to slime Sy with it.

Mea culpa. :)

same nasty tactics that are used on them. Playing the "fair game" simply doesn't work!

16. I think the opposite: it would be wrong of someone of good conscience
not to shepherd this information in a way which would give it the maximum impact.

The Washington Times might be trying to help Bush by juicing this story into the popular consciousness before the Olympics and before the conventions in order to make sure that people have forgotten about it by the time the election comes around.

15. Sy is the one reporter with a conscience... I can not believe
that he would ever hold back a story as critically important than this for any other reason than he is still verifying facts. I may be cynical at heart, but I'd hang my hat on Hersh being a man of integrity, sincerity, honesty.
