GOP Incumbent Drops Out! Donate to Ginny Schrader (D-PA) Now!
Yesterday evening, 6-term GOP Congressman Jim Greenwood (PA-8) decided to retire from the House of Reps. (Read the CNN story here.) This is a major opportunity for a Democratic pick-up.

Greenwood's Democratic Opponent, Ginny Schrader, is in a great position to win the seat, but she needs cash. Many Democratic blogs, including Kos, have taken up her cause overnight, and she has already raised thousands of dollars. I strongly urge DUers to help out, too.

Visit her website to learn more about Ginny. She sounds like a great candidate: http://www.ginnyschrader.com

There is a link to donate on her page. Or you can go directly to her donate page by clicking here:

http://www.ginnyschrader.com/donations.htm

Let's go help her out, DUers!

A lot of stuff is happening now (Berger, etc) and it could get bumped down before anyone has a chance to read it.

29. Moderates have no future in the Republican Party
Greenwood has been in Congress for a dozen years, in politics for 24 years. He's bright and personable and under normal circumstances would have been moving on to bigger and better things by now. But in the present state of the Republican Party, East Coast moderates don't stand a chance.

One thing I read last night said Greenwood really wanted to be a senator and realized it was never going to happen as long as Spector and Santorum were around. But the problem is clearly larger than that. And his dropping out at this late stage of the race suggests there's more to the story than is visible on the surface.

44. He's actually a decent guy..
It's too bad that the few voices of reason in the R column, seem to be discouraged..

The party would implode, if the ones with a conscience, and a few brain cells, changed to independent, and caucused with the dems..

Go Ginny :)

from Kos.

As the poster said, he got tired of "carrying water" for the Bushies.
On another note, the idiots at the DCCC have not exactly been enthusiastic about Ginny, since she didn't come up through their selection process. Send her some turkee, as Atrios would say!

Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 07:01 AM by CWebster
"Okie from Muskogee" was never on the jukebox at AppleJacks.

Also, the Republicans didn't hire Hoffman, that was the environmental group, Del-Aware. Local artist, Val Sigstedt was the original leader. One of his apprentices, Colleen Wells, had family in NY state, where Hoffman was working on environmental issues under the name of Barry Freed (this is during the time when he was still in hiding). Wells introduced Hoffman. And, it was Peter Kostmayer who was the Democratic congressman at the time who fought along side us.

Though he might be made to feel quite welcome under the DLC corporate unity flag, which is more hospitable to centrist Republicans than progressive Democrats.

5. Ginny and F911
http://www.ginnyschrader.com/Photos/thumbnails.php?album=4

Was on the front page of our local rag.

Like Specter, Greenwood, a moderate Republican was considered at an advantage due to name recognition, but his behavior has been controversial this past year. Once, he went on a tirade against some high school students who questioned the case for invading Iraq, prompting debate on local editorial pages.

Now we have to get Hoeffel in and Specter out.

9. That's my old congressional district
I don't have much to offer, but I'll dig up $10 for the gal. I moved to that district back when Peter Kostmayer had the office. Greenwood has been tough because he's pretty liberal when it comes to issues like choice and the environment.

On the bright news, I think Tom Druce was in that district, at least we know he is unelectable!

35. I gladly gave $25.
For those who don't know, Tom Druce was the Republican state representative considered such an up and comer the other Repubs referred to him as "Mr. Governor." That all ended one night when he was driving home from some drunken partying with staffers. He ran down and killed a black vet/semi-homeless man in Harrisburg and kept right on going without even stopping to see if the guy was alive or dead. He quickly turned in his state leased vehicle and got a new car. When one of his partying buddies got a guilty conscience and sent an anonymous tip to the Harrisburg authorities some months later, investigators tracked the murder vehicle to its out of state new owner and were able to get blood and fibres matching the victims from the tires and car body. Meanwhile, Druce had turned in a fraudulent insurance claim stating that he had hit some kind of traffic barrier on the highway. This from Mr. ideal GOP family man with a wife, two kids plus a new baby at home. Of course, once he got out on bail, he stalled his trial and took all possible appeals before he finally did some jail time. And while he was out, would you believe this gutless murderer was hired to lobby the GOP reps/senators in Harrisburg? It used to turn my stomach every time I saw him in the halls.

25. How did you guess?
People who make below $20.000 year are not worthy of Bush's tax breaks. And somebody has to pay so Bush can give more money to his rich buddies. Why not take it from the less fortunate? /sarcasm

I can't wait for Kerry to be in office and to get rid of all the tax breaks for the wealthy. I just about had it.

52. yeah!
i spent the last year working for americorps (which bush used to tout so much), we made shit for money, were salaried (and it wasn't unusual for me to work a 70 hour week), and got NO tax breaks besides the $100 refund check, but only because my employer deducted too much money.

on top of that, i got a $4750 education award (to use when i attend college this fall), but i have to wait to save up enough money so i can pay off the taxes on it. that's right, i have to pay taxes on my federal education award (but they won't take them out of the award, i have to pay them up front).

the work that i did was threatened every day by this man and i sure as hell made people know that whenever they said they appreciated my work or gave me a thank you.

I'm on my way; to check her out, at least. I can't donate until payday, another 2 weeks.

Could you leave this pinned until the first for all of us waiting for a payday?

I'd like to see a spot somewhere at DU for information about and donations to all the Democrats running in senate and house races where we have a fighting chance. While I'm supporting Tim Willoughby in my local race, he is unlikely to unseat Howard "Buck" McKeon. I'd like to toss some support, in the form of $$, letter writing, phone calls, etc., to any/all other dems who have a chance to win. It's the best way I can think of to show support for President Kerry.

53. An update...
Schrader has raised over $20,000 in less than 14 hours....

For those of you looking to donate to a candidate in the future, do so through actblue.com

Here's the reason. Most credit card companies take a percentage cut of the money donated. The company Schrader is using not only takes a big cut (due to the low volume), but they also donate to repugs....

One of the guys from actblue did the math...if the $14,000 donated (at the time of the post) had gone entirely through Act Blue, Schrader would have goteen an extra $1,000....

Act Blue has links to all federal candidates for donating, web sites, and volunteering. You can contruct your own page.....

Those of you from various states that have some intersting state elections going on...I strongly encourage you to go over there and put something together so we can become aware of them!!!

ourcongress.org also need people to submit info on individual House races...so stop by and check them out, they are a one stop site for info on specific House Districts....
