"Protestant Majority Disappearing in U.S."

The United States will no longer be a majority Protestant nation in years to come, due to a precipitous decline in affiliation with many Protestant churches, a new survey has found.

Between 1993 and 2002, the share of Americans who said they were Protestant dropped from 63 percent to 52 percent, after years of remaining generally stable, according to a study released Tuesday by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

At the same time, the number of people who said they had no religion rose from 9 percent to nearly 14 percent, and many are former Protestants, the survey's authors said.

The study was based on three decades of religious identification questions in the General Social Survey, which the opinion center conducts to measure public trends.

1. Does this take the fascist/fundies into account?
It's a LOT easier to say you love Jesus, feel smug and self-righteous,and hate those who don't hold the exact same beliefs you do,than to LIVE JESUS and love everyone unconditionally. :grouphug:

2. It accounts for some, but don't forget that Catholics are
just as capable as being fundamentalist too.

4. People who have no religion rose from 9% to 14%
That's a very encouraging number IMO.

I certainly don't believe all religion and spirituality is bad, just that most of it is. Seems like lots of Americans are finally starting to realize that.

6. Protestants are just as bad on women's rights as Catholics can be
Not all Protestants but many protestant faiths are conservative on choice.
Need I remind you that some of the biggest pro choicers in the senate and house are catholics.

9. We should remember that the south is the hotbed of the anti choice
movement and the south is mostly protestant. Many devout Catholics may be conservative on issues of choice, gay rights but so are many Protestant faiths and not only that, the Catholics tend to be more anti death penalty, pro helping those in poverty, anti war, etc, I personally think it would be a better country if we were more Catholic, some will disagree with me and call me nuts but rather that than a protestant majority.
