Unfortunately Kerry needs to make an example out of Sandy Berger
It would show a big difference between him and Bush, who refuses to let people go who should be gone. Kerry can use this problem to show he will not take any misconduct from his underlings.

1. Has Berger been found guilty and punished?
If not, why should Kerry do anything?

This whole story stinks ... do you really believe this man stuffed some papers in his SOCKS?

2. I don't know
For one I don't think that getting rid of Berger immediately will help much; they will then smear him on his lack of loyalty.

For two I want to see all the facts come out before I condemn Berger.

3. too early
all we have is one story from John Solomon, who I find unreliable.

The timing stinks especially.

19. That and
Some missing documents that have been conviently misplaced. If this were Bush's missing service records we would be all over him.

4. I disagree completely.
He's stayed above the fray in most of Bush's mishandlings. He needs to stay above the fray here too. Don't get attached to this in any way at all.

5. This desperate story is being trotted out for distraction.
Kerry should annihilate it for being what it is, Rovian horse shit.

9. Agree
Most of the papers he took were related to one of the terrorist "success stories" of the Clinton admin. (Millenium)
Why the big deal? There are copies of the stuff in other archives.

Why is this stuff classified anyway? What's next, toilet paper?
Give me a break, this is nothing and it should stay nothing.

17. THANK YOU. You are correct.
This investigation was begun MONTHS ago. It's being leaked now to distract from the negative hit the bushies are going to take from the 9/11 report.

7. If Berger broke the law and not just a rule,
HE should resign Kerry's campaign. That would save Kerry from having to do it and being called disloyal and it would show Berger as a stand up guy who takes responsibility for his actions.

11. No
If you can't defend your friends how can you protect our country from terrorists. Kerry needs to blast Bush for playing politics. This happened last summer. Why are they bringing it up now. If he doesn't defend Berger they will call him a weak flip-flopper. He has to project a STRONG image.

12. The "LieMachine" has "killed" Berger..
No mattyer what the final disposition of his actions, he is D O N E ..

Kerry must cut him loose and do a super-sleuth job at finding a replacement A S A P ..

If we "owned" the microphones and cameras, this might not be a big deal, but we do NOT, and Kerry must not fall into the neat little trap they have set for him..

If he backs up Berger, and they press the issue...and Berger IS found to have done something wrong, it reflects on Kerry...

Even if Berger has done nothing "illegal", he HAS admitted to "sloppy".. Can you imagine the mileage they will get out of "Sloppy National Security Advisor".. We cannot have that..

Kerry should immediately set up a PANEL of security advisors.. That way, if any one of them becomes a target, Kerry is not hurt personally.

14. EXACTLY
I agree with most of the responses, but there are times when you need to stand up and fight and there are times you need to cut your ties and let them win. This is one of those times to cut your ties. Berger should step aside on his own and the story goes away today. If not the story will hang around until Thursday, which is why this story was leaked in the first place to try and dampen the report. But Thursday will come and Bush will once again be proven a poor leader.

15. NO
It has nothing to do with cutting Berger loose, they are not worried about Berger. They are trying to cloud the report due out Thursday. Has nothing to do with Berger.

I sure am glad the repubs can't fuck over all of us like they can some people.

This is all about hurting Kerry and you just play right along with it.

20. I find it difficult to believe that Kerry didn't know about this.
If there was anything to it, I have a feeling Kerry would have axed Berger some time ago.

21. I agree
But at this point if he keeps him he will have to continue to answer question about it. Cut him loose now and it ends. If this is seen as a GOP victory then so be it. You got to pick your fights and this one is not worth fighting.

23. " cut him loose now and it ends"
I doubt it. The RW media will take it as a sign that they've drawn blood and it will be "see Berger WAS guilty" or "Kerry is disloyal" or BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. I say if it is as innocuous as it appears, ride it out and figure how to turn it back on the assholes.

22. Two important points
1. This happened last NOVEMBER

and

2. It was already investigated and no charges have been made or are even pending.

Remember what Josh Marshall said? "Muddying the waters"

the repubs are trying to draw blood, as previously said, plus cloud the report's release.

just out of curiosity, why'd they go after berger though?
