Stuart woman(freeper bitch) starts campaign to keep Howard Stern off air

Associated Press

STUART, Fla. - Mary Ellen Edison was tuning in Monday for the return of Howard Stern's syndicated morning show to a large portion of Florida's airwaves.

Edison, though, isn't a Stern fan.

Instead, the Stuart woman is organizing a campaign that's fighting to keep Stern and his wildly popular show off the air, and taking that battle directly to the local and national advertisers who buy commercial time on the program.

"I'll then contact them in writing and let them know what their dollars are supporting," said Edison, a 49-year-old mother of four.

Stern's show was dropped in February by several stations owned by Clear Channel Communications - the nation's largest radio chain. It returned to nine markets, including ones in Tampa, Orlando and West Palm Beach, Monday on stations owned by Infinity Broadcasting Corp.

Clear Channel said it feared any continued association with Stern and his show - based in New York City and which features sexually explicit talk and off-color humor - might lead to losing their station licenses.

1. Good.

The more right-wingers attack Howard Stern, the more Kerry voters he creates.

2. Stuart woman: turn off your damn radio. I have never listened to Stern.
Nobody has forced me.

This reminds me of the woman who complained to the police that her neighbor (male) was exposing himself from his house. When the police showed up, they could only see the man's shoulders from the woman's window. Policeman: "Mam, I can only see his shoulders from here..." Woman: "No, you need to get on top of the dresser to see the rest."

3. Hey! My mom lives in Stuart, FL!
There's actually some cool stuff there: the Velvet Underground Appreciation Society and on Cofusion Corner, there's Groovy Movies A-GoGo and Confusion Records, two great stores....and there's some alright indie rock bands. Plus their Public Library was the only one in Florida that could get me a copy of Maury Terry's "the Ultimate Evil."

But there is a strong freeper presence there. Too bad. The beaches are beautiful.

4. Don't know about the Velvet Underground Appreciation Society...
...but Confusion Records moved to Jensen Beach and I think Groovy Movies A-GoGo went out of business -- at least I haven't been able to find them. The cool plaza at Confusion Corner is being refurbished and isn't so funky as it was, although the German Deli is still there. Downtown Stuart is not the same without them!

11. Oooof, that sucks.
I remember seeing my mother in Stuart after she moved there and noticing this tiny record store on Confussion Corner...and going in, hearing the Beatles bootleg playing on the stereo, talking to the owner, who knew Maureen Tucker, Jad Fair, and Penn Jillette (50 Skadillion Watts, Jillette's record label, is also based there). And being surprised that there was a better record store in tiny little Stuart Florida than there was in Nashville, TN (where I was living at the time).

Haven't been back to Stuart since 2000, so I'm not sure if those shops are still there or not. I HOPE Groovy Movies is. They had a great selection of really rare stuff. We rented "Putney Swope" from there (my favorite movie now!)

Stuart is a really beautiful town, and the local Mall had an Arthur Treacher's in the food court!

5. Somehow I think Stern's advertisers are fully aware what his show is
all about.... LOL

You go, girl... This will only spur Stern on and add to his vitriol against the RW. More votes for our side!

14. Actually, no
Large companies hire ad agencies to place their ads nationwide. Many times the companies (and even the agencies) have no idea which shows actually get the ads, since the purchases are made by evaluating time-slots and ratings. Sometimes simply informing the advertiser what is being discussed immediately before the commercial break is enough to get them to drop it (that's how someone went after the advertising revenue for a Tampa dj 'Bubba the Love Sponge').

My preference is that the FCC would get out of the obscenity enforcement, but letter writing campaigns like hers seem no different than any other citizen organized boycotts. I don't see why this one qualifies her as a "freeper bitch".

7. Call her toll free number!
It'll cost her. Ask her why she is in opposition to the First Amendment. I'm serious! I'm calling right effin' now!

8. My dear Miss Edison:
There are two knobs on the radio, darling...one of them turns the radio off. The other, voila!, turns the dial to another station! Problem solved. Why it's so easy, it's allowed me to ignore Rush Limbaugh for almost two decades!

I love these bluenoses with nothing better to do than to decide, all by themselves, what's appropriate for the community to listen to on the radio in the morning. Get a life!

12. It's too late for me to edit. But I thought people understood that AP
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 09:11 PM by Bombtrack
doesn't post in paragraphs it posts in sentances and that you could have more than 3 sentances with AP stories.

It's 12 sentances and paragraphs are often 4 sentances long. 3 * 4 = 12.

Sorry, don't know what to do.
