Doonsbury NIXED in 38 papers - What is this country coming to?
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 06:53 PM by jackstraw45
What happened to free speech? If you speak about liberal values and criticize the right wing, you get hurt in this country. Just ask Linda. Michael, Joe, Dixie Chicks, Whoopi, Eddie, Sean, Steve, Howard, Tim, and now Gary.

http://poynter.org/forum/?id=misc

"Consolidated Publishing Co., publishers of The Anniston Star: Continental Features, a publishers consortium that prints Sunday comics for 38 clients, has killed the cartoon strip Doonesbury."

Edit: thanks for the extra names...I know there are many more.

18. Did you catch the part about Jeb Bush threatening him?
I know it was years ago, but just who do these people think they ARE?

Trudeau probably did not mention it before now, because he gives so few interviews.

I am so sick of the Bushes! I can't wait until November!

13. Susan Sarandon was disinvited to the United WAy
shindig in Florida back in 2002. I helped picket the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown when they disinvited Tim and Susan for the Bull Durham showing...

But on a happy successful note...Tim Robbins and Sean Penn both won Academy Awards this year for best supporting actor, and best actor, respectively for "Mystic River".

4. Read And Comment On My Parallel Thread...
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 06:46 PM by mermaid

On Edit...
Here is the opening of my parallel thread, titled "Being Dixie-Chicked and Thin-Skinnedness...Why Do The Repukes Get A Free Pass?"

Has anyone else noticed this? Or is it just me?

Natalie Maines makes a disparaging remark about bush, introducing a new phrase into the American lexicon: "being Dixie-Chicked."

The latest folks to get "Dixie-Chicked" are Whoopi Goldberg, for her joke regarding the Resident's last name, and a slang term for a part of the female human anatomy...and Linda Ronstadt, for her comments about Michael Moore, and Fahrenheit 9/11 at The Aladdin, in Las Vegas.

Reportedly, in the Ronstadt incident, half the crowd cheered Ronstadt, and half eruoted into boos. Those who booed her apparently streamed out of her concert (the comments were made right near the end of the entire performance) she dedicated The Eagles' song "Desperado" to Michael Moore. the ones who booed and streamed out reportedly also vandalized posters of Ronstadt, and threw their drinks at the posters. These same people, guilty of VANDALISM...demanded refunds of their ticket price on the Ronstadt concert, after, of course, having enjoyed the entire show, sans the finale, "Desperado." And yet, here they are, vandalising the hotel, and demanding a refund??

Where's the fucking cops??....

19. Interesting. I didn't hear anything on the news about the cheers.
I heard it on more than one news program, and each time they made it sound like most, if not all, of the crowd was booing, walking out, and demanding their money back! Nice balanced reporting--and I don't even watch Faux. And then they kicked Linda out of the hotel, where she had booked a room, and would not let her stay there! Un-fucking-believable! Even it the whole crowd booed, it would have been wrong for the hotel to do that, but it was only the repug portion of the crowd! That gets me even more pissed off. Just like SlimFast firing Whoopie--was it just because of all the angry repug letters? Wow!

22. More news
Posted in an earlier thread, thanks to whoever posted it, don't remember now. Las Vegas news.

"I was so stunned to read in the newspaper that anyone had a negative
reaction," said KLAS-TV, Channel 8, news anchor Paula Francis. "Everyone who was leaving when I was leaving was just thrilled. They thought it was a good concert."

At the end of an hour's worth of singing, "she got a standing ovation, then she came out and did the (`Desperado') encore," Francis said. "There were loud boos and there was quite a bit of applause. But everyone calmed down right away and seemed to enjoy the rest of the encore."

8. Bastards
It just gets worse and worse. This must be how Jews felt in Nazi Germany - it's the frog in the pot of water syndrome - as it slowly comes to the boil, by the time the frog knows there's something wrong, it's too late.

First They Came for the Jews

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me.

17. Ok and this is what two righties are saying on another board...
"Again, this idea that free speech= being able to say whatever you want is just stupid. You have the right to say what you want but there WILL be consequences. How has anyone's right to free speech been infringed here exactly, Millie?"

and

"Who are Michael and Joe? You can't mean Moore, as he's raking in money hand over fist. Dixie Chicks got a ton of free publicity, including interviews and magazine covers, out of their brouhaha, so I'm not feeling the need to be overly sympathetic to their supposed plight. Ditto Linda Ronstadt - how was she hurt by one casino deciding not to book her anymore?

As for free speech, remember that Consolidated Publishing is a business and can print whoever it likes. They are not required to print anyone. They are not the government. Free speech is alive and well, imo."

27. Doesn't matter
They took a survey on the question. 21 to 17, I think. If you think those representing that 21 don't have enough money to buy enough papers to silence your dissention, you're mistaken. That's the problem with unregulated capitalism. The money becomes so lop-sided that the lower incomes just don't have any money to buy anything so their voice doesn't matter.

23. Then money rules
That's what they're saying. Here's what I'd say:

Seems you're saying money rules and it's all about the one with the most money making the rules and having the power to promote speech, squelch speech, manipulate the masses. The Revolution wasn't fought to turn our freedom back over to monied interests 200 years later. It was fought to take our freedom out of the hands of British monied interests and put the freedom and power into our own hands, the hands of the people. I am not prepared to give up the rights of people to speak their mind to a bunch of money grubbing corporations and I'm sorry that you are.

26. Yeah, death threats from right wingers and your home address publicized
by gun toting rednecks...yeah, Michael Moore wasn't targeted...

:eyes:

The gestapo tactics that were used by this White House in silencing dissent has now been adopted by the Corporate Media by gleefully printing lies from the right wing, accepting daily talking points from the White House and reporting them as fact, and misrepresenting the truth about things as small as whether people booed at a concert when numerous other sources refute that.

political views by giant media conglomerates that are supposed to put the public interest -- which requires a lively political debate -- first.

It's one thing to report these views and let people make up their own minds about what to read and what to purchase. It's another completely when a company like Clear Channel -- who uses the PUBLIC's airwaves -- decides to CENSOR a popular artist based on that artist's political statements.

30. I can remember the first time
I felt a shiver of fear over the realization that the bush administration could lock me up without reason and noone could do anything about it. I never felt that during the Clinton administration or any prior administration. This attitude of intimidation comes right from the top and it works because it is scary to speak out against them. The only thing money has to do with it, is we hear about the people with money and fame speaking out. Watching what happens to them (the hate spewing from the RWers) tends to make everyone else 'careful about what they say' as Ari would say....
