I don't get Veterans for Bush
I was driving to work today, and there was a Dodge SUV in front of me, with a license plate that said 'Korean Veteran'. And a pile of stickers 'W in 2004', 'Boycott France', 'God Bless America', blah, blah, blah...and I was just staring at them and wondering..if you went thru a war, and you know the hell that it is, how can you just sit there and support a President who is so pro-war? Are you that thick that you believe his 'reasons' for going to war? Or do you not care that 900 kids have been killed? I don't get people.

3. It takes all kinds, even the stupid ones...
Just because someone's a veteran doesn't mean they think.

4. Korean Vets
Up front, I am not suggesting anything about most Korean War veterans. It's just something I've noticed among two I know personally, and it is only a private observation. It may or may not apply to the person you saw.

These two Korean War vets are very proud of that status. I've known them since childhood, in fact, as they worked with my mother. They told all kinds of stories about the war. (This would have been my first clue if I had been a bit wiser.) They're very patriotic, very pro-military, and very Republican.

Unfortunately, as I found out during my teens when I tried to use both of them as sources for an essay I was writing, neither actually fought in the war. They were both stationed in Korea very late in the war and saw no actual combat. They did their tour, went back to the US, and invented for themselves a memory of having served as combat soldiers. My father, a Vietnam vet, did something similar except that he never set foot in Vietnam. He was in the Philippines the entire time, yet I was in my 20's before I knew this. I also know a few Navy veterans who served in either Korea or Vietnam, but on big ships that never came close to being involved in combat.

IOW, there are veterans and there are Veterans. I know, now, one can talk to these people and tell the difference instantly. I don't know any actual Vietnam combat vets personally who are in favor of this fiasco we're in now. I know they exist, but I can't get inside that mindset either.

7. I'll guess these are veterans lucky enough not to have to rely on the VA.
Take a look at the VA budget since George has been in office.

11. It's the station-respecters again...
I keep noticing a divide in people's thinking about authority; there are those who respect the position over the person in it, and there are those (like myself) who don't automatically respect any title, but wait for the person filling the position to earn respect. Unfortunately, almost everyone in the military belongs to the former group, perhaps necessarily so. Some of my biggest fights about this piece of shit administration has been with other Democrats who have been giving the benefit of the doubt to these assholes because of their "rank." I started feeling better when I saw the number of those people waking up in the last year.

12. For some vets, it's all they have.
As a vet myself, I've known plenty of them. For some it's the highpoint of an otherwise dull and banal life. The repugs glorify the military and by extension the vets. Though the vets may have hated it when they were in, had bad experiences with the VA, they lap it up when Boobya start waving the flag and spouting platitudes about their supposed "honor", "courage", "sacrifice" and the usual drivel one hears.

The truth is that the military is, for most who got stuck in it, a long period of mindless boredom and meaningless activity. It is aimed at only one thing, making young men and women, into obedient robots who will kill when told to by people who don't give a rip about them.

I find nothing quite so loathsome as politicians and generals shedding crocodile tears over the corpses of young men and women they sent to kill and die. Usually, as is now the case in Iraq, for nothing but to elevate the ambitions of the people supposedly grieving over them.

Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 08:33 AM by vetwife
There is a station called veterans Bradcasting and they station is playing in Iraq and all over. It is owned and run by a disabled vet in Illinois. I have corresponded with him for years. I know him as Sam the Corpman. He worked for the VA for years in Illinois and I live in Georgia. His little organization has put the truth out as far as they can to keep their 501 Status. If its any consoliation,
I am giving him info and he is broadcasting it. I can even broadcast via a CD and he will play it. I am planning on doing so.
We are telling the VETERANS to vote those out of office who are hurting the veterans. Personally I know he is a Kerry man. I am a Kerry woman, my husband a Kerry man and the station is throwing some facts out there day in and day out. He has to be careful or he will lose his non partisian status and we both walk a tightrope. On my Veterans org. I have to be totaly non partisan. this is hard. This is why I started another site called Focus Group Now and Take it Back. No tax exemption status. Not that I have to worry about it. I personally have 150.00 overdrawn in my personal bank by keeping our organization up. I am doing all I can to help the veteran to vote this moran out of office.

We are grouping together. Vets for Justice, Veterans for unification and United Veterans of America and throwing the heat on. We will see
I will give you all the station lisiting.
and other info.....please help my organization.....
http://groups.msn.com/UnitedVeteransofAmerica/whatsnew

and any veterans from here who want to put out a program here you go..

Here is the station news info and link

Any issue that has to do with veterans or uniformed personnel must be recorded and sent my way. Wouldn't you just love to know that your Congressman heard your opinion on our radio station. For that matter call your Congressman and arrange for an interview and SEND it to me and we will broadcast it to the world. LET FREEDOM BE HEARD!

I need your support to make the effort worthwhile, for you see we will never be a group united, our opinions and interest in issues are all different and too diverse, but we can be united over the airways so that our opinions do not go unheard! I hope that you will take part in this adventure with me, but if you are too shy to make a program, then show your support by listening to what gets on the air from WAVBSR, VETERANS' RADIO.

GET THIS MESSAGE OUT TO ALL YOUR VETERAN MAILING LISTS.

The Station URL is: http://www.live365.com/stations/thecorpsman

17. There are 3 kinds of veterans
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 08:23 AM by dodger501
1. Those who have been there and know the horror of war and wish to prevent it from happening again.

2. Those who have been there and know the horror of war and found they liked it.

3. The REMF's, as noted in this thread

My place of work is loaded with #3's, almost (not quite) all Bush lovers. You can count the #1's on one hand - they are either quiet or for Kerry. No #2's that I am aware of here.

MN DU'ers: You know Joe Repya? The Lt. Col. Vietnam and Gulf War combat vet that the Star Tribune interviews everytime they need a "veteran's perspective?" He is one of your #2's, definitely, co-chair of the MN BC04 campaign.
