Kerry Knocks Bush on Anti-Poverty Efforts
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 12:29 PM by JI7
article claiming Kerry is not speaking on issues of poverty and working people is crap. i knew because i remembered Kerry spoke about it just recently. i guess the people quoted in that article were not paying attention.

<PHILADELPHIA — Sen. John F. Kerry assailed President Bush's record on fighting poverty and joblessness among African Americans today and pledged aggressive efforts to protect blacks' voting rights in November.

"Don't tell us that unemployment isn't a problem when you see that African American unemployment is now above 10%, double the rate for whites," he said. "It is unacceptable, in the wealthiest nation on Earth, that we tolerate vast and growing pockets of poverty, from the hills of Appalachia to the streets of Philadelphia. Making life better for the working poor is part of my vision for a stronger America."

This president just really seems to have a problem with the truth. He was talking about John and me going out and raising taxes on working people," he said, referring to his running mate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. "I don't think he really knows who working people really are. Working people are not the top one and a half percent of Americans. Because 98% of America will get a tax cut under my plan.">

5. I'll bite - if it makes you feel better (just kidding). Actually....
This is a MAJOR issue and should be out in the spotlight on a daily basis. The number of poor people in the United States is growing and at the same time, the rich simply get more money they couldn't possibly spend in a lifetime. It's about time we had one hell of a progressive tax burden on the super-rich. That would put an interesting spin on the question of who has the most billions.

I would like to see Kerry volunteer to donate a significant sum of his own money to fight poverty - putting the money where his mouth is. I doubt that would happen, but at least he's talking about it and he's absolutely right. BushCo hasn't done a damned thing for middle-class or poor Americans.

7. Kerry has done a lot through the years
he set up programs in poor areas where young people could go after school to learn things. it's not a recent thing either, but something he has done for years.

and he is a supporter of a progressive tax system.

12. Mind if I join the party?
Some very good points here, and this is one part that should be repeated often:

This president just really seems to have a problem with the truth. He was talking about John and me going out and raising taxes on working people," he said, referring to his running mate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. "I don't think he really knows who working people really are. Working people are not the top one and a half percent of Americans. Because 98% of America will get a tax cut under my plan."

Lots of those naive rank-and-file Republicans still think their taxes are going to go through the roof thanks to decades of Republican propaganda.
