I need help with this project,
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 01:22 PM by bobbyboucher
After this latest bullshit, the Ronstadt thing, I really would like to list this sort of brownshirt bullshit and put it into email form and start sending it to every damn American that I can.

So, if I may be so bold, can I get some help with links to every known instance of fascist behavior ala the couple getting arrested for their t-shirts, or the Dixie Chicks, or this latest thing about the radio show in New Mexico, or any others that you can think of, and I will put together a nice presentation, and we can all send it on its way.

Remember the guy getting thrown out of the Ohio State commencement for turning his back? Or the elderly ladies that were arrested in Tampa, what seems like ages ago, for holding the wrong sign.

1. No help?
I think it would look quite staggering if all the instances of unconstitutional behavior were put together.

6. The guy who got thrown out of Ohio State is Jeff Seemann
He is a former DUer (AWD), and he's running for Congress in Ohio's 16th district.

Fear as human shield faces jail
BBC correspondent in Florida

Fippinger will now probably lose her home, her pension, even her freedom

Sitting in her modest two-bedroom home on the west Florida coast, Faith Fippinger begins to cry as she talks about the prospect of going to jail.

-snip-

High penalties

But it was her decision to travel to Iraq to try to prevent the war which has got her into trouble.

Back from Iraq, activist finds price of protest is $10,000 fine

When Ryan Clancy went to Iraq to protest the war, he knew he was breaking the law. He thought the penalty was a $500 fine, a price he was willing to pay for the cause of peace.
Ryan Clancy

Ryan Clancy, owner of Trounce Records, 422 N. 15th St., Milwaukee, fears he may lose his record store if he is forced to pay a federal fine of $10,000 for violating the travel ban to Iraq.Quotable
They're not differentiating between me and a uranium dealer, even though the only thing I brought over there was crayons and construction paper. I don't think they can make weapons of mass destruction with that.

- Ryan Clancy

But when Clancy recently got a call from federal officials, he learned the stakes are much higher. Authorities have fined Clancy $10,000, and if he doesn't pay, he could spend up to 12 years in prison.

11. bill maher fired for being politically incorrect...
I know this is an oldie, but worth being put on the list, methinks. he was one of the first casualties of this war... and as Bill himself says, he was the only person so far being fired over something 911.

can't find a regular pop media link, hope this one will do:

12. Some older stuff here: farleyfiles.com
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 01:54 PM by bain_sidhe
click on the "fascism watch" button in the menu on the left side. It's my almost-abandoned database site. I haven't added much over the last few months, so it's quite out of date. But there's a record of a lot of the older stuff that many have forgotten. Can't guarantee the availability of some of the articles (Many newspapers and magazines put their articles in a paid archive after a few days or weeks.) But the entries have enough information to do searches for still available links - and in any case, enough to serve as a reminder.

**edit**

For a more focused list, go to the search page and select BOTH "Fascism Watch" and "Abuse of Power."

13. just off the top of my head...vaguely...
-- Susan Sarandon and Tim robbins being UNinvited to speak at the baseball hall of fame
-- Dixie Chicks
-- Whoopi goldberg
-- linda Ronstadt

(those are ones that felt direct impact)

indirect impact but threatened boycotts:
-- Meryl Streep, Chevy chase, John Mellenkamp, et al at th Kerry fundraiser

non-celebrity stories I recall:
-- a college student who hung the flag incorrectly and got his room trashed (I think)
-- A man who with his son wore a "Peace Now" tshirt in a mall and were required to remove the shirts or be arrested

Much more serious and sinister instances:
-- using the dept of homeland security to track down democratic state senators across state lines to force them to vote on gerrymandered districts.
-- Oneill, and his book and charges of treason
-- Wilson, and his report and outing his wife, and later a smear campaign on his integrity
-- Clarke, and his book, and the smear campaign on his integrity
-- Scott Ritter, the smear campaign

there's probably more, just off the top of my head

A BUZZFLASH READER COMMENTARY
by Maureen Farrell

"Public health officials want to shut down roads and airports, herd people into sports stadiums and, if needed, quarantine entire cities in the event of a smallpox attack".- the Boston Herald, Nov. 8, 2001
http://www.bostonherald.com/news/americas_new_war/pox11082001.htm

"Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft's announced desire for camps for U.S. citizens he deems to be 'enemy combatants' has moved him from merely being a political embarrassment to being a constitutional menace." -the Los Angeles Times, Aug. 14, 2002 http://www.truthout.org/docs_02/08.15B.ashcr.camps.htm

The Bush administration is developing a parallel legal system in which terrorism suspects -- U.S. citizens and noncitizens alike -- may be investigated, jailed, interrogated, tried and punished without legal protections guaranteed by the ordinary system. . . . " - the Washington Post

snip

Summer, 2002: Former presidential counsel John Dean writes an article asking, "Could terrorism result in a constitutional dictator?" A month later, the Sydney Morning Herald reports that the Bush administration might employ Reagan-era security initiatives, installing "internment camps and martial law in the United States." The LA Times reports on Atty. Gen. John Ashcroft's "desire for camps."
