A question for Army guys or ex Army
When you received your initial clothing issue how many pairs of fatigues did you get. I seem to recall we got two pair but it could have been four. It has been forty years for me and I just don't recall. I remember one set of Class A's and a winter issue but just can't recall how many fatigues. I remember a set of class x for basic training and I think we also got a pair of field fatigues and two pair of combat boots.

1. We received two
When I was in Army basic, I received 2 sets of BDUs. That was in 1990. Not sure what the deal is now.

'68 for me, memory says the same basic issue as you, & the DI dotted the backstrap of 1 pair of boots w/ white nailpolish, so you cdnt save 1 pair for inspections; had to alternate every day.

3. Four sets of fatigues, I think...
it's been a long time, but I remember we had to "break starch" every morning and rotate boots, of which we had two pairs. One pair of boots was marked with white paint so we couldn't cheat. That was at Ft. Benning, GA, in 1966.

12. 1966 .... It Was 4 Pairs
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 03:29 PM by ThomWV
4 pairs of fatigues, two pairs of boots, I think a half dozen pairs of socks and underwear, A set of Class A's and I think it was 2 sets of Kackie or however you spell it, a pair of dress shoes and a couple of pairs of black socks. There was some other stuff too, razor, toothbrush, shit like that. Its been a long time so I don't remember it all. There is this one thing, and I always thought it was silly as shit. I did my first tour in RVN and then two extensions, and then another tour, for a total of 3 years. Every time I came home they gave me another Class A uniform. I'd fly home in it, put it on to fly back to California, and then toss it in the trash. They gave me new fatigues each time I came back into country too. I have no earthly idea why.

21. That's How I Meant To Say It
We just flew back wearing whatever it was we had on. It was at Oakland that they gave us new class A's Then off to the airport and a flight home. Then I'd fly back a month later and at Oakland put my fatigues back on, tossed the brand new uniform, and got a flight back.

17. What we got in 1981
I came in just after the camouflage fatigues came out. We received:

Four pair camouflage pants
Four camouflage shirts
Two field jackets
Two camouflage hats
Two pairs of boots
Six sets of green underwear (t-shirts and boxer shorts)
Two white t-shirts
Six pairs of green wool socks and two pairs nylon dress socks
Two towels and one washcloth
One pile cap
One AG 44 winter dress jacket
One AG 344 summer dress jacket
One pair AG 44 suit pants
Two pair AG 344 suit pants
Two garrison caps
One tie
Two long-sleeve dress shirts
Two short-sleeve dress shirts
One pair dress socks
One duffel bag
Two sets thermal underwear

Female soldiers received a handbag and the Army Classic Uniform, which has sixteen pieces and 20 different ways to wear it. (Old war story: I have two MOS. I went to the second school in 1986. Every Thursday we wore class B uniforms to school, and every Thursday we'd drop all of the soldiers wearing pumps and skirts out of the formation so they could walk to school individually, since you can't march in pumps. As you'd pretty much expect, it took about two weeks after a female soldier arrived at Goodfellow before she learned to like wearing her pumps once a week. And about a week after I became a class leader, I declared the female uniform for my class to be slacks and low quarters. And about an hour after I issued this decree, I was in the first sergeant's office.

"Why did you declare a female uniform?"
'Two reasons, top. These kids need to march now because they won't do it when they get to permanent party, and in four years I've never been in a permanent party unit that let the females pick out the uniform they like--it was always declared. Call it Army Training.'

At the next morning's formation, the first sergeant spoke: "From now on, the female Class B uniform is slacks and low quarters."

When I issued the decree, one of my troops said we should make them wear skirts so you could see their nice legs. I sentenced him to one million pushups for being a sexist pig and fifty more for being a smart-ass.)

Later, the clothing bag changed to two sets of Temperate Weather BDUs and two sets of Hot Weather BDUs. They also dropped the AG 44 uniform--a mistake, I think; the AG 44 looked much sharper than the AG 344, but they never set a wearout date for the AG 44 so I used that uniform for probably ten years after the phaseout.

20. You guys are great and some great memories
The whole reason I asked is because I issue my drivers four shirts and a hat and expect them to wear them when at work. I keep getting the story everything is in the laundry. I wanted to be able to tell them how it could be done because I did it in the army. That was seven days a week 365 days a year and the excuse that everything was dirty just wouldn't fly. They only work five days a week so there really is no excuse. I was thinking I did it with just two sets of fatigues but after thinking about it some I realize that really wasn't possible. A big  to you all and thanks for your service especially those who were in a hostile environment. Welcome back home safe and sound.
