O'Leilly offers $25,000 to anyone who can prove that "Stuart Smalley"
beat him in the radio ratings. He will give the money to a charity.

Who will take him up on the offer??

2. What? The ratings are out. Can't he just read them himself? Or
does it have to be on Faux to be "credible"? What is he on?

4. What's to prove? It's a fact.
I guess he could weasel out of it by saying that ratings aren't accurate because they don't sample every listener.

6. Well, they don't count the web listeners... and I am a faithful one.
So if anything there is a humongous UNDERCOUNT for Al Franken.

8. Reminds me of when Dan Quayle crusaded against Murphy Brown
... another fictional character.

Maybe if we're lucky, someday O'Leilly will just implode.

10. I think that Old Blow can't hold up under the pressure of actually
being held to his statements. He's just like a schoolyard bully, all loud mouth and full of threats until his target finally punches him in the face and then he goes crying home to his momma in their upper middle class neighborhood that he grew up in.

He said "Stuart Smalley", not "Al Franken". That is how he will weasel out of the bet.

What a pin head.

14. Don't Bite That One
Ratings are black is white is black. Sure, you can find Franken ratings that beat O'Reilly and then I can find 25-54 year old men in zip code 013465 and the opposite result happens.

Having worked with Arbitron numbers for nearly 30 years, I could probably tell you every way they have and are distorted...as well as how to interpret them for the real information they're intended to give. This isn't a popularity contest...it's a measure of a radio station (not the show, the station) strength in various area, age groups, races and so on. It's stricly geared to the advertising community who do most of their ad buying on demo numbers and locations (say you own a Home Despot in Far Rockaway...you want the rating numbers of Westchester County and could care less about anywhere else).

Plus, except for the "overall" numbers...those are 18+ that are posted on the Arbitron website, the citing of other specific numbers without Arbitron permission is a violation of the copyright and any station that willingly gives out these numbers are in jeopardy of having their ratings "delined" (or not included in the next report) or some other sanctions (not to mention how they tend to fall for some unknown reason in subsequent reports). Also, comparing station signals has to be taken into consideration...O'Reilly's on far more stations with more national market reach. How can you compare what's virtually a New York only show with one that airs in 100 markets?

This is a red herring...but what else is new with O'Reilly.

15. Franken should forego the $10K ...
... and just demand that Bill come on his show and read from "Those Who Trespass".

16. There is a Catch........

Did you hear O'Reilly, he said he beat Franken in the overall ratings.

Which is true, Franken only beat O'Reilly in the 25 to 54 demographic. But overall the radio factor got higher ratings than the Franken factor with all people 12 years and older.

O'Reilly specifically stated that overall his radio show beat Frankens show, and he is correct. But Franken beat him in the prized demographic of the 25 to 54 year olds, which is the only people the advertisers care about. So you could say Franken is beating O'Reilly in the demo anyone cares about. The average age of the radio factor listeners is 60 years old, the advertisers do not care what the 54 and up demo listen to.

O'Reilly said his show beat Frankens show in the overall ratings, and he will pay $25 grand to anyone who can prove he is a liar. He knows his $25 grand is safe because he is right. And nobody claims Franken is beating O'Reilly in the overall ratings, it only says Franken beat him in the 25 to 54 demographic.

O'Reilly knows this, yet he claims everyone is saying Franken beat him in the overall ratings.

Which is just not true.

This is a quote right from the article:

According to its April-to-June survey, the first since Air America's debut, Franken posted a 2.6 share from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., compared with a 1.1 share for O'Reilly in the 25-54 demographic.

O'Reilly did slightly better than Franken in the broader demographic of all listeners aged 12 and up. But they were each eclipsed by Limbaugh in both demographics.

What this also shows is that O'Reilly monitors left-wing web sites to see what they are saying about him. I bet he reads my web site every day. I never said franken beat O'Reilly in the overall ratings, just on the 25 to 54 demo.

17. Franken didnt beat him, he just beat him in the most desireable age group.
For advertisers that means he may as well have beaten him, but in the overall ratings O'Reilly beat O'Franken last quarter. He better watch his bakc though.
