Strom Thurmond revisited
Earlier this evening "60 minutes" reran an interview with Thurmond's half black daughter, a very gracious lady.

And I was thinking, again, that during the whole time when this was news, that no one stopped to point out that the woman was really a girl of 16 and that for all purpose this might have been a rape.

At least, I did not read anything from this angle.

2. Not in South Carolina.
I don't think any way.

3. Well, they may have been madly in love, but ...
The lady's mother was a servant in the Thurmond household and as such, was completely dependent on that family for her income, so, when young Strom came-a-calling ... well, you know the rest.

I think South Carolina's laws for statutory rape had lower "age requirements" during that era but if lust lives in the heart ... well, you know the rest.

What you're describing is a story of lust, power, and evil that was all too common in those days.

4. I would hesitate to call her "gracious" since she said nothing...
while her loving father was doing everything that he could to fight civil rights. How about House ------? Seems more apt.
