Do we have a talking point about Moore being greedy with F9/11?
A repuke guy I know said that if Moore was so patriotic and wanted get out the word regarding Bush he's just release it to DVD now... I countered with a pretty lame answer saying that thousands are still going to the theater and seeing F9/11. Usually when I counter I like to have more ammo.... He simply replied that Moore is greedy for the money hence it still being in theaters.

Can you guys help me crush this toad?

Thanks

1. Ask him if he's some kind of Communist
Does he think there's something wrong with honest, Capitalist profit?

Then ask him 'why do you hate America?'

12. Great response!
If I ever get the chance I'm going to throw out that "Why do you hate America?" line into some repug's face. Or if they say it first, my reply will be "Why do you hate Americans?"

2. its not the money
Moore actually encourages people to download the movie free from the internet. He wants as many people to see the movie as possible, and as long as others arn't making money off of his work, wants them to see the movie any way they can.

4. He's working on a deal for a home release
For one.

Lots of contracts with theater owners, too. I think they'll get a bit pissed if he threw it out there now.

Besides, they have to make the DVD's and market them, you know.

Finally, what's wrong with making money in America? This is still a free country and a capitalistic society. Surely a conservative has no problem with free enterprise, right?

Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 08:08 AM by Cannikin
When its no longer making money, they'll pull it. Sony takes it from there. Moore has little direct say so here.

27. A few talking points / charities, money etc
The charity donation is part of the deal Disney demanded from Harvey Weinstein, so that he would not profit from the film more than what his take would have been from Disney if the film had stayed with Miramax.

Not only does Moore not get a huge back-end -- which is his due, after all the movie is a hit regardless of content -- but he has no say in the choice of charities. Disney has said the money will go to non-political charities, according to the LA Times a couple of weeks ago.

If Moore has gotten rich, it only because he understood that there are millions of people who were hungry for some sort of community expression of what they were feeling individually.
He has always said the country is much more liberal than the media portrays it, and the growing size of his audience just proves it.

And at first, he did just give money away, (mainly to filmmakers looking for funding) but as all rich guys figure out, there isn't enough money to hand some to everyone, so he has devoted his resources to continuing to provide counter weight (no joke intended) to the massive entrenched media oligarchy.

8. Moore wants to influence the greater number of people as is possible
If he releases the DVD, theaters will stop showing the film. It is SOP. Fewer people will buy the DVD than those who will attend the film. He is making less money by leaving it in the theaters since Disney controls 60% of the theater take.

9. Release of the DVD is generally the decision of
the distributors not the director or the producer. It's simply good business and is standard procedure to keep a film in theaters as long as it's drawing crowds. The DVD will be out before the election. Moore is giving a percentage ( ? 30?) of his profits to charity. He also doesn't mind that it's been pirated on the internet.

Greedy gold diggers generally don't make documentaries.

11. They Hate Us When We Beat Them At Their Own Game
Now whatif F911 had been released and bombed? We know how those assholes would be dancing all over the place and saying how us "libruls" can't even fill a movie theater.

Moore deserves every cent he makes on this movie for the pure capitalistic reason that he spent the money to make it and took the risks. Is there anything more American than that?

Of course the Wingnuts want the DVD out now...get the bad news out of the way fast...since they can't hide from it any longer. Here's hoping MM has made a nice chunk of change...gets to take a real nice vacation with all the perks...and he has the DVDs ready to go in Septemeber.

I couldn't think of anything better to view during the Repugnican swillfest in NYC than F911! Unless Hunting For The President or Outfoxed come out on DVD at that time as well...hmm...I should have plenty to watch that week

15. He's not greedy...
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 08:17 AM by dissention
If they want to call him greedy, they might as well say that about everyone in the entertainment industry, including the Gropenfuher Governor in CA who demands $25 million a picture. Or Bruce "Balding" Willis who demands $20 million. Or Bo Derek who demands...well...nothing because no one wants her now that her svengali husband is dead and can't force people to hire her; she needs to show up at the foot of Reagan's casket looking like a mob widow for anyone to pay attention to her.

It's my understanding that 60% of all theatrical profits go to a charity of Disney's choice. The charity hasn't been chosen yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the RNC.

13. Classic Question
Libruls are all socialists who hate money. That's the crap these idiots spew. Now's your chance to explain to the rightie tighties that Dems don't hate wealth or the wealthy and that we hope Moore makes LOTS of money so he can make more films. We like it when money is used to make things better in our nation. Plus, the movie ( Haven't had a chance to see it yet) has footage that is more profound when viewed in a theater, from what I've heard.
This guy sounds real jealous...

25. Besides, it's Marketing 101
The higher the price, the more cachet the product has. If a Porsche sold for $5,000, would it be considered as cool? Because F911 is showing in theaters, that lends a touch of subconscious validity to it. If it came out as a TV movie, or direct-to-video, or somesuch, it'd be seen as cheap. By being a hit first-run flick, it's au courant.

14. Was Mel Gibson being greedy when
"The Passion" was in the theaters for months? Of course not.

<snip>

Miramax parent Disney announced Friday that the Weinsteins made the purchase through a new special-purpose company, the Fellowship Adventure Group. Any distribution profits that might have gone to Miramax or Disney will be donated to charity. The Weinsteins now hold all rights to the film and, according to Disney, have paid Miramax for all costs of the film to date. That figure is believed to be north of $6 million. The brothers are also responsible for any finishing costs as well as marketing costs not paid by the film's distributors. <snip>

http://movieweb.com/news/news.php?id=4013

Does Michael Moore get any of the profits if the Weinsteins hold all rights to F911? It's made almost $100 million. $92-96 million is a HUGE sacrifice for Moore. He just wanted the film in Theaters. That's what he got.

Anyway, throw the Mel Gibson line at him. Are the Repukes the only people allowed to make millions of $$$? Hell no.

20. No
"The Weinsteins now hold all rights to the film and, according to Disney, have paid Miramax for all costs of the film to date. That figure is believed to be north of $6 million."

The Weinsteins only hold the distribution rights. They went to Lions Gate to distribute it, but Lions Gate has nothing to really gain from it besides a bit fo the revenue generated. They have no rights to it or any rights to distribute it on video. Last I heard, Disney of all places was getting the video rights. Ha.

18. Tell him not to worry. The DVD will be out before the election.
In the meantime, lots of people apparently still want to see it in theaters.

Besides, Moore doesn't make all the business decisions. The distributors stuck their necks out & they deserve to make some money, too. Much is going to charity but there will be some left over for everybody involved.

I join the chorus: Ask your friend why he hates the American Way!

19. Because of the nature of F9/11...
...if he doesn't release it on DVD within reasonable proximity to the elections, a portion of the potential audience will be lost. I don't do surveys, so I don't know what that portion is. I do know that there are people who detest the "theater experience" and won't go to see ANY movie. They wait for Blockbuster or the DVD release and feel that they can live without a trip to the theater.

I choose to reject basic freeper logic and believe that while Moore is unquestionably making a profit from F9/11...which he absolutely deserves to do...he made the movie because he had a message that he felt was important.

Do I feel that Moore hits the message on target 100% of the time in everything he does? Of course not. Do I feel that it's worth it to experience his body of work to get to the essence, which usually IS on target? Yeah, I do.

Of course, realize that if Moore releases the DVD too close to 9/11/04 he will be met with screams of "opportunist" by the freeps. Just as many stood up and took Bush to task (rightfully so) for his tasteless campaign ads featuring 9/11 images, people will say that a DVD release of Moore's film during the annual period of remembrance / mourning is an equally offensive move. Don't take my word for it, read the freeper threads if it happens.

Moore needs to do what he thinks is right. The right, left and undecided spectators will voice their opinion anyway. The day that he becomes driven by what the public tells him to do is the day that he loses his edge and becomes just another pundit.

21. Hmmm. I'm sure Repukes like Hannity, Coulter and
Limbaugh don't make any money from their books, appearances, etc. Is any winger going to claim that 'they're only in it for the cash?".

Fucking ridiculous RW argument - when you criticize the boy king in a work of art, it *can't* make any money or the points made therein are invalid? When Hannity, Scarbourgh, Miller, Boortz, Limbaugh, Coulter, etc turn their paycheck over to charity then we'll talk about who's greedy and who's not. Up until then, it's STFU.

As well, it's been reported that the Repukes may give Sony a hard time over the DVD advertising (campaign financing, etc) and I would speculate that this may have had some effect on the release date.

28. Having it in theaters brings people out so they can watch it together.
So they don't have to sit at home wondering if they are the only sane person(s) left in America.
There are also the theaters to consider too. They need to get first crack so they draw in customers. What theater would want to run a picture that everyone who wants to see it has a copy of already. I'm sure it's all business decisions that he has to agree to to get funding for the flick in the first place.
