'Fahrenheit 9/11' Making GOP Nervous
http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?flok=FF-APO-1402&idq=/ff/story/0001%2F20040722%2F0702762994.htm&sc=1402&photoid=20040623NY112

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Republicans initially dismissed ``Fahrenheit 9/11'' as a cinematic screed that would play mostly to inveterate Bush bashers. Four weeks and $94 million later, the film is still pulling in moviegoers at 2,000 theaters around the country, making Republicans nervous as it settles into the American mainstream.

``I'm not sure if it moves voters,'' GOP consultant Scott Reed said, ``but if it moves 3 or 4 percent it's been a success.''

Two senior Republicans closely tied to the White House said the movie from director Michael Moore is seen as a political headache because it has reached beyond the Democratic base. Independents and GOP-leaning voters are likely to be found sitting beside those set to revel in its depiction of a clueless president with questionable ties to the oil industry.

Based on a record-breaking gross of $94 million through last weekend, theaters already have sold an estimated 12 million tickets to ``Fahrenheit 9/11.'' A Gallup survey conducted July 8-11 said 8 percent of American adults had seen the film at that time, but that 18 percent still planned to see it at a theater and another 30 percent plan to see it on video.

5. Hi Dripping Springs!
I saw that great documentary on Patrick Rose's campaign Tuesday evening on PBS out here in Washingtion state - Seattle area. I had tears of joy and righteous justice in my eyes at the end.

I grew up in north Texas many years ago. Moved to Cal when I was 15 (1957).

Congratulations. :toast:

12. Howdy!
Yes, my husband and I watched it, too! It was great, especially since we knew that Patrick won! :toast:

Patrick is as genuine as he seems on the documentary. He graduated high school with our oldest daughter and comes from a wonderful family. There hasn't been much news about the current race. I guess it will heat up soon.

Thanks for the hello and nice to meet you!

2. Great article
It is so fun reading about Republicans and their attempts whistle past the graveyard on this sensitive issue.

Look at it this way, Bush will be in full slime mode this October, while at the same time the shelves of every video selling store in America will be filled with F-911 DVDs. And 30 million Americans will watch it from the comfort of their homes mere weeks before the election.

And then the Kitty Kelly book comes out...

It's looking more and more like we got this lying bastard by the balls.

9. "Whistle past the graveyard" I haven't heard that phrase for
a while and it is a very appropriate use after reading this article.
I agree with you about the F911 DVD's but what Kitty Kelly book? Have I missed something about a book to come out?

14. Kitty Kelly
Kitty Kelly has a book coming out on the Bush family in October. Word has it she interviewed Neil Bush's long suffering ex-wife extensively, and that the woman spilled a whole bunch of ripe stuff about this clan of pompous plutocrats. What excites me about the Kelly book is that it could very well reduce the secretive grandeur of the Bush clan to street level gossip. There have been a lot of books lately that have trashed the irresponsible and useless Shrub, but mostly on a very high minded and academic level. But when it gets down to the real nitty gritty, this is the one that could do the most damage to Bush with the man in the street.

15. That is wonderful, I hadn't heard of this book, but you can bet
I will buy it. I have to agree with you, a trashing of these hateful people on a level that all can understand (personal, their family lives and ex-wife) will have a greater effect than any of the political books out today. Thanks for the info, I am looking forward to this. October will be like Christmas - F911 on DVD and the Kitty Kelly book.

4. I think the real goal of F9/11 was to swing the silent 50% of non-voters.
At least, that's how I read it, and that's what Michael Moore implied a number of times. He's often pointed out that about 50% of the nation does not even bother to go vote. Many of them just don't care or don't think they can make a difference.

F9/11's best chance at shifting the election is not amongst the hard core Bushies, or even the swing voters, but amongst the non-voters. People who otherwise wouldn't give a damn, but might get out to the polls if they were sufficiently pissed off. The most frequent comment I hear from people regarding F9/11 is, "Normally I don't vote, but after seeing that movie, maybe I have to this year."

The more people who vote, the better it is for the Democratic candidates.

13. that is SO much the point
perceived wisdom is that the more negative a campaign becomes, the lower the voter turnout is

they've ALREADY become the most negative campaign in history, and their only hope is to stay that way, in hopes of keeping as many people as possible from voting

failing to do it that way, you know what the next step will be

6. We learned from the best
So the GOoPers don't like it when liberals put their message in a nice, neat, easily-digested package? Wah.

The major difference between F911 and the standard repressive claptrap is that Michael Moore has scrupulously grounded his presentation in the truth, backed up every so meticulously with actual footage of the corrupt Bush administration itself. What can they say? That after solemnly intoning against terrorism to reporters Bush didn't say, "Now watch this drive"? It's right there on the screen.

So cry all you want, repressives.

8. I love that line
but if it moves 3 or 4 percent it's been a success.

No - that is not a success, that is a landslide.
If nationally it is 49-46 Kerry and you move 3-4% that makes it
52-43 Kerry.
9 or 10 points gives an electoral rout.

If it moves 1%, that is a success.

10. Nothing succeeds like success
the more money it makes, the more the press has to report on it, the more people feel like they have to go see it to be part of the cultural phenomenon.

F9/11 is the new Star Wars.
