Greenspan: Bush Tax Cuts Helped Economy
Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan delivers his semiannual monetary policy report during an appearance before the Senate Banking Committee on Capitol Hill Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

WASHINGTON - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said Wednesday that Congress has lost the ability to manage crucial long-term budget issues and new mechanisms are needed to keep future costs from ballooning beyond the nation's ability to pay.
Greenspan defended President Bush's three rounds of tax cuts, saying they had helped ensure that the 2001 recession was mild and brief and have provided critical stimulus to keep the current rebound on track.

July 22, 2004 08:09 AM EDT
WASHINGTON - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell slightly last week in another indication that the labor market is still showing signs of improvement.
The Labor Department reported that 339,000 newly laid-off workers showed up at state unemployment offices for the week ending July 17, down by 11,000 from the previous week.
Weekly benefit claims have been on a roller coaster in recent weeks, falling by 40,000 the week of July 3 to 309,000, the lowest level in nearly four years. However, that improvement was followed by a jump of 41,000 claims in the next week.
