Chris Matthews has started getting exceptionally hardball-ish on his show, towards his guests, but that's probably because the election is approaching. However, a trend I've noticed over the past few months: He's kind of soft on the Republicans..never criticizes Bush, sets up tee-shot questions for republican guests to answer with their talking points....but then he hammers Democrats. He's been all over this Berger thing, and I don't think I've watched an episode when he hasn't been jabbing at Kerry in some capacity.
A typical two-guest scene goes something like:
Matthews: "Ok, Mr. GOP, tell me something about the Bush campaign." GOP Wonk: "Well, <talking point, jab at Kerry>" Matthews: "If that's the case, Mr. Democrat, then why is Kerry such a flip-flopper." Dem Rep: "<plays defense>" GOP Wonk: "That's not true. <talking point>" Dem Rep: "But.." Matthews: "Let's move on. Mr. Democrat, would Kerry have opposed the war?" Dem Rep: "<tries to clarify the vague question before answering>" Matthews: "Why are you refusing to answer? Would he have opposed the war?" Dem Rep: "Given the same intelligence, Kerry would have given inspections more time, and.." Matthews, having a stroke: "YOU'RE NOT ANSWERING THE QUESTION!" Smarmy GOP: "See, they don't have a platform." Matthews: "Let's go to Mr. GOP. Weren't you impressed with <latest administration testimony>?"
I'm really growing to despise him.
