What is up with all the big job losses in the news today?
All from LBN today:

Washington Mutual to cut 2,500 jobs

MITSUBISHI JOB CUTS (1200 jobs Normal, IL)

J.P. Morgan plans more job cuts (2000 additional jobs gone)

Capitol One Ends 1,100 Tampa Jobs

and this:

Mass layoffs rise in June

snip: Nationwide, U.S. employers cut 134,588 jobs in 1,379 mass layoffs, compared with May's total of 87,501 initial claims for unemployment from 988 mass layoffs. In June of 2003, U.S. employers took 1,691 mass layoff actions, resulting in 157,552 initial claims for unemployment.

Is it just me, or does all this sound pretty damned bad?
