Retired Teacher Crafts Saddle For President
Retired Michigan teacher Jim Rice, 75, has spent the past six weeks crafting a saddle for President Bush.

The result is worth about $3,500.

Michigan Congressman Nick Smith will present the saddle to the President later this year.

This guy lives near me. Do you think someone should tell him that Bush is afraid of horses -- even the coin-operated ones in front of Wal-Mart?

2. Bush will saddle up................
Rove and ride him around the Oval Office. Cons seem to like kinky stuff like that.

3. Hey Gio
Hi from Lenawee County. In the local paper he states he is not a big fan of Bush. After reading that part, I'm thinking about having him make me a saddle.

6. As I rember
the article said he is trying to build his reputation for his daughter who is his apprentist saddle maker. Saying he doesn't support Bush won't help him in this county.

8. Will need retrofitting
To adapt to the bike and a roll cage and teethguards.
At least it will look nice next to Saddams pistol and Geronomos skull.

11. a horse-tack expert here at DU ...
... noted a while back that a good custom-made saddle requires measurements from the rider as well as the horse.

Given that the Connecticut Cowpoke rides an air-conditioned pickup truck -- they might have to skip the "horse" part.

And as for measuring his posterior ... what bets the White House will "misunderestimate" his girth, to the extent that the saddle won't fit him anyway?

14. Amazing how many people actually think that * rides horses.
Interesting that Ron, Jr. said that Reagan used an English saddle, while pictures of Nancy show her in a Western saddle.

16. I have seen pictures of Reagan in both
Western saddles and English (Jump seat not Hunt seat).

Reagan really did love to ride (I love horses too). I wonder if Ron Jr. knows his saddles? It seems as though Reagan rode both ways from photographic evidence.....

18. Maybe Reagan rode Western for movies
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 07:44 PM by kskiska
Ron Jr. explained on TV how his father gripped the horse between his knees in the English saddle, explaining the scuffing on the boots used in the funeral services.

Seems the English saddle was his personal preference. Guess Nancy was more comfortable with the horn.

Found the quote:
…"These are English riding boots. Dad also used an English saddle, which pushed him forward, and he clamped the horse between his legs." The boots had been washed but expressly not polished for their journey through Washington streets. Spots of wear showed on the leather, which was buckled around the rider's legs.

19. Gotta give ol' Ronnie credit ...
for having the balls to wear those old fashioned peg top breeches and even to ride in an English saddle. I'm sure his image people were always on his case to ride in the more macho looking western tack.

As for Shrub getting a custom saddle, alot of people, including horse people, assume that Bush rides because he owns a ranch. I had a minor arguement with a guy I know, who used to rope and bulldog in rodeos, who didn't believe it when I told him that not only does Bush not ride but is actually afraid of horses. When I told him he bought the ranch right before he ran for president he almost fell off his chair.

but then they have been "riding" him for a while so you might be able to move up in line, bring cash.
