This will get me flamed but...I don't mind reading Andrew Sullivan |
|
I disagree with easily 60-75%% of what he says. But the reason I enjoy reading his blog/articles, etc. is that for better or worse he represents a lot of people I know. Socially more or less liberal and not a fan of the religious right/wingnut faction of the republican party, but at the same time a chip on his shoulders about liberalism and dems that seems to be mostly borne out of some absurdly outdated misconception of them as weak or mamby pamby.
So personally I've found that reading him gets me better prepared to deal with discussing politics with a lot of people I know in real life. Even though they don't read his stuff, they pull out a lot of the same arguments and same defenses. Reading or listening to someone like Limbaugh or Hannity or Brooks or whoever else does nothing for me because I disagree with everything they say and if anyone I know gets their arguments, debate points from them then there is no talking to them anyway so I never bother to discuss politics.
Flame away. And again, this isn't an endorsement of any sort. Just a statement that if I have to listen to and address SOME points from the other side, I'd rather it be from someone who I know I at least have some common ground with, small as that may be. Especially since that common ground is the opinions on gay rights and the religious rights demonization, which I maintain was something that swung the vote for Clinton in '92 and which could swing the vote for Kerry in '04

5. I'm under no delusions about the guy... |
|
When he's wrong, he's very wrong and I totally disagree with him and it infuriates me just as much as when I disagree with anyone.
But like I said, at least he has SOMETHING that I agree with him on, even if his methodology and ability to turn a blind eye to the degree of the problem is infuriating.
And as a writer, he's not horrid as far as his style.
I never feel comfortable or cozy about the guy. Just that if I have to hear the other sides opinions (which I do like to do on occasion), I'll take him over any number of other right wing yahoos any day.

I try very hard to stay away from reading anything written by hypocrites.... Why! I don't trust them and there's so much more to read out there from folks who are true to their core... Sully is not, no matter if he gets one right every once in a while....

I don't take anything he says seriously and it most DEFINITELY does not sway me in any way. It's simply in the guilty pleasure category.

2. No flaming here-it's always good to understand the other side's opinion |
|
If Sullivan (I'm not all that familiar with his writing) writes in a more logical and intellectually honest way than more noticed conservatives like the FOX people and Rush, then at least one can respect his opinion.
I always have liked reading WF Buckley, and I don't agree with him about very many things. At least he's extremely literate and can express his ideas without being intimidating or obnoxious. Hannity and Rush are not very intelligent and that's why they appeal to so many morons who would never sit and read real arguments about issues.

Even though I realize they're badly cooked by most other people, easily 60-75% of the time, so I can't see flaming you for hoping to find diamonds among the dross.
Just don't expect me to share it.

...my then 10 year subscription of TNR not long after Andrew took over as editor. I found Sullivan to be narrow-minded, agenda-driven, and a closet conservative. I could've always turned to National Review if I wanted to read that, I didn't need it in The New Republic.

How many people Miss Muscle Glutes has infected with HIV during her sexual romps?
No offense,vi5, but I truly hope that unsafe sex is not part of the "common ground" you share with Sullivan!
Nor any close relationship with Tina.
I actually tried reading Miss Sling 2004's "Virtual Normal" for the reasons vi5 describes. I tossed it when I got to her pathetic part about "the pain that is ever present in a homosexual's life."
Hey, Andy! "Your ever present pain"....That's just your asshole crying out! Start with the smaller dildos, before plopping down on those plastic monstrosities you love so much! Give your anus a break!
vi5, personally, I think your better off reading Jackie Susann any day!!
