Inside the Ring

By Bill Gertz and Rowan Scarborough

U.S. officials tell us that the FBI is focusing on a single document in its investigation of former White House National Security Adviser Samuel R. Berger. Investigators are trying to determine why Mr. Berger improperly removed a highly classified after-action report by Richard A. Clarke, an aide to Mr. Berger, that was harshly critical of the Clinton administration's response to the so-called millennium terrorist plot to bomb Los Angeles International Airport and other targets in late 1999.

snip

Officials said the investigation into the removal of the Clarke memorandum is expected to lead to the declassification and publication of the document. This could expose the duplicity of Mr. Clarke, who had little criticism of the Clinton administration in public.

3. makes sense...........but what a LOAD this is
''This could expose the duplicity of Mr. Clarke, who had little criticism of the Clinton administration in public.''

huh?

is a BOOK considered public?

is his TESTIMONY on TV considered public?

did he NOT criticize WJC for not going after Osama hard enough?

am I missing something here, or are they just that bold liars now?

4. "declassification of the document"
What good would stealing a copy do when they still have the original? And Clarke was harsh on both Administrations, so where do they get this "duplicity" nonsense?

5. by prosecuting, they'd HAVE to declassify it to enter it as evidence
if they don't, I think there's no case to be made

Berger is doing an Ellsberg, perhaps

that would be cool, but Ellsberg defied them from the beginning, and made his intentions clear

Berger isn't doing that

I still can't figure out what his deal is

good for him, hiring Lockhart, though

he knows how to handle press
