Before Joe Camel there was Fred Flinstone
Did you know original network run of The Flintstones (1960-1966) was sponsored by a cigarette maker and that you could watch the main characters smoking Winstons at the end of the show?

A really good (and disturbing) look at TV cigarette advertsing and promotion

3. Ramar, King of the Jungle
used to get chased through the "jungle" by "headhunters"...He'd duck behind a bush, whip out a box of Good & Plenties, deliver a commercial directly to the camera, put the box away again and continue the chase.....

6. They used to have doctors recommend it in commercials.
And I also heard they had "cigarette days" in schools. While they took the girls into the gym to talk about menstruation, or some such thing, they'd take the boys and introduce them to a representative from a cigarette company, who would give them all free packs of cigarettes.
