My favorite Bible quote, even though I ain't Christian:Luke 6:27-36
Luke 6:27-36
Love for Enemies
"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you do not ask for it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from who you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."

Song of Solomon, Chapter 7

7:1
How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince's daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.

7:2
Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.

7:3
Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins.

7:4
Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bathrabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.

7:5
Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries.

7:6
How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!

7:7
This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.

7:8
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

7:9
And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.

7:10
I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me.

7:11
Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages.

7:12
Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.

7:13
The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.

4. My favorite (also not Christian but have read Old & New Testaments)
Matthew 7:15-16

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

Matthew was warning us, in his own way, about the Orwellianism that the Soviets and Bushevik practice.

Matthew never envisioned a science which woul study how best to deceive people, nor monsters like Frank Luntz (Goebbels Jr.), who would study down to the 10th decimal place how to "convince" men and women that grapes DO INDEED come from Thornbushes.

Yet he tried to warn us even though perhaps ion many ways he could not conceive of the actual form it would take 2000 years hence...

5. I like the words "Judge not lest ye be judged"
The GOP seems very judgemental to me. I know I myself have been guilty of this but I am trying to change my attitude. It is very hard though with the GOP behaving in the manner they have for so long. I am making an effort.

and righties actually embrace the OT more...they just pay lip service to Jesus and the NT.

they are more the eye for an eye type than turn the other cheek type...

it's the smites that get them going...not the charity and brotherly love

24. Matthew 25
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 06:26 PM by notsodumbhillbilly
41: Then he will say to those at his left hand, `Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;
42: for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
43: I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'
44: Then they also will answer, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?'
45: Then he will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.'
46: And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

26. DU'ers should love Habbakuk. Here's why:
Habbakuk is outraged by the violence and injustice in society asks god what he should do about it.

God says write it down.

29. The verses:
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 07:15 PM by AP
Habakkuk
1: 1 The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet received.

Habakkuk's Complaint

1:2 How long, O LORD , must I call for help,
but you do not listen?
Or cry out to you, "Violence!"
but you do not save?

1:3 Why do you make me look at injustice?
Why do you tolerate wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me;
there is strife, and conflict abounds.

1:4 Therefore the law is paralyzed,
and justice never prevails.
The wicked hem in the righteous,
so that justice is perverted.

The Lord 's Answer

1:5 "Look at the nations and watch-
and be utterly amazed.
For I am going to do something in your days
that you would not believe,
even if you were told.

1:6 I am raising up the Babylonians, <1>
that ruthless and impetuous people,
who sweep across the whole earth
to seize dwelling places not their own.

1: 7 They are a feared and dreaded people;
they are a law to themselves
and promote their own honor.

1: 8 Their horses are swifter than leopards,
fiercer than wolves at dusk.
Their cavalry gallops headlong;
their horsemen come from afar.
They fly like a vulture swooping to devour;

1: 9 they all come bent on violence.
Their hordes advance like a desert wind
and gather prisoners like sand.

1:10 They deride kings
and scoff at rulers.
They laugh at all fortified cities;
they build earthen ramps and capture them.

1:11 Then they sweep past like the wind and go on-
guilty men, whose own strength is their god."

Habakkuk's Second Complaint

1:12 O LORD , are you not from everlasting?
My God, my Holy One, we will not die.
O LORD , you have appointed them to execute judgment;
O Rock, you have ordained them to punish.

1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look on evil;
you cannot tolerate wrong.
Why then do you tolerate the treacherous?
Why are you silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

...

The LORD 's Answer

2:2 Then the LORD replied:

"Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.

2:3 For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come and will not delay.

They never talked about this in Sunday School...

And a young man was following Him, with nothing but a linen sheet thrown about his naked body; and they laid hold of him,
But, leaving behind the linen sheet, he fled from them naked.

If Barney Frank was arrested in the park at night with a naked man who escaped, what would the fundies say?

aka the sysop's prayer:

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from the words of my groaning?

O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, and am not silent.
