What a mean-spirited asshole. One of my favorite people in this world is my morning bus driver. He's just the sweetest, friendliest, most helpful human being I've met in a long time. There's a little old lady who has to go across town once a month, and she's a resident in the nursing home up the street. My bus driver knows how scatty she is, she always forgets where her transfer stop is, what number bus she has to take, etc. He always, always stops the bus, puts it in park, and walks her over to her bus stop, sits her on the bench, tells her what number to look for, the whole nine yards while we're all just waiting to get to work. (He's also my early morning political conversation buddy.) Anyway, the old lady is white, my bus driver is black. To think that anyone would refer to my bus driver and black people like him as being one of 'those people' really steams me. He's such a dignified, sweet, caring, smart, decent human being. Really a lot nicer than a bunch of white people that I know.

I hope that there's a really nice warm spot in hell for people like Novak.

Using the phrase, "those people" does not make one racist. My girlfriend of three years (we just moved into a house we closed on last week) is black. My stepdaughters are black. I AM NOT. Yet I have used the expression "those people." I have said things and used race to describe who I was with.

No one, no one can fucking tell me, that they can hold a conversation with a black or hispanic and be completely unaware that they are holding a conversation with a black or hispanic. That it does not matter what race they are is a beautiful thing, not that you ignore what race they are.

I do not care what race a person is. I never have. There are only two kinds of humans in my world. People who are cool and people who are assholes. Assholes come in all colors, just like humans do.

If someone calls me a greasy, beaner son of a bitch (I am of Mexican and Mescalero Apache descent) I would be insulted. But I would find it silly if a bunch of white people were insulted for me.

It is how a person interacts with other races that makes a racist. Not a couple of words. Bill Clinton is probably the most open about race political figure out there. "Those people" coming from his lips would not make him a racist.

any attempt to not notice the color or ethnic background or sex of the person you are conversing with is obviously silly. To be uncomfortable with people of different backgrounds creates the problems. And when one group of people -- and for a variety of historic reasons, it's usually white people -- refer to other groups in certain ways, it perpetuates the problems. Having watched Mr. Novak and his very sick view of the country, and being more familiar with him than anyone should have to be, I can assure you that he fits smack dab into the, "What more do those people want?" mold. And I mean "mold" as in fungus. What was pointed out about Mr. Novak, I should add, has to do with a generational mind-set, and it would be very hard for a person under 50 to really get the full implication of his words.

36. Here's the problem with "those/you people".

It's a very specific terminology, a sort of code phrase, that has been used to denigrate blacks in the past. It's a kind of "wink and nod" thing. IMO it's worse than "nigger" because "nigger" at least is up front and honest, where as "those/you people" is far more insidious. I call it "Miss Millie" racism, after the white mayor's wife in The Color Purple who on the surface appeared to be accepting of "little colored children" but the minute she felt threatened she started going off about how much she's done for "those people". It's a perjorative that suggests an us/them dichotomy, as if blacks (or Jews, or any other ethnic group it's used for) are somehow not part of "us".

I do agree with your sentiment that it's actions that make people racist. But what people say is a very telling indicator of behavior.

I guess what I'm saying is that it's not a random or accidental turn of phrase, at least when Repukes use it. It means something very specific. Besides, this is Nofacts we're talking about, who has a very long history of saying unkind things about minorities. Just read up thread for some examples.
