Is Barack Obama the future of the Democratic party? |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 09:37 PM by RummyTheDummy
Boy I sure hope so. CNN did an interesting piece on him just now. He's one of the top two or three most impressive candidates I have ever seen. He looks like a star in the making.
The people of Illinois are truly lucky to have a guy like this representing them. I look forward to his keynote speech Tuesday night at the convention. Has anyone read his book "Dreams from My Father : A Story of Race and Inheritance"
Sounds like an interesting read.

3. I wouldn't put Obama and Ford in the same category, necessarily |
|
The only two things they have in common are: they're both black, and they're both Democratic elected representatives. The similarities largely end there.
Ford is the son of a former Congressman who was largely groomed for politics (hence the use of "Jr." after his name). He's a solid centrist who hasn't hesitated to decry the politics of progressivism. He voted for the Iraq War. He can be counted on to consistently side with the "pro big business" wing of the Democratic Party, in the event of internal disagreements.
Obama, OTOH, is the son of African immigrants. He was (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) the first ever black editor of the Harvard Law Review. He graduated with honors from Harvard Law School -- but rather than take a high-salary job in corporate law, he returned to the South Side of Chicago to spearhead community-improvement efforts. Where Ford will often run to the center (or center-right, depending on your perspective), Obama is a champion of traditional progressive causes without the baggage of stale liberalism. Ideologically, Obama is much closer to the likes of his fellow Illinoian Jesse Jackson, Jr. than he is to Harold Ford, Jr.

6. Nobody wants to run against him, they will be trounced. |
|
Even Jim Edgar former Governor doesn't want it. Mike Ditka doesn't want it. They'll end up running a sacrificial lamb because nobody wants to lose to this guy.
I can't wait until Obama's great speech. From state senator to star of the Democratic Party. I love it.
