F 9/11 opened in arts theaters known for tiny audiences?
MSNBC article titled "Success of Moore film rattles Republicans" implies that F 9/11 opened in obscure artsy theaters. Did I miss something here? Back on June 25th I swear I saw it in a huge multi-screen cineplex called Tinsletown much like many of you and the rest of the country in 800+ theaters.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5487374/

Quote:
""Fahrenheit 9/11” opened in June mainly in locally owned arts theaters that specialize in obscure films and tiny audiences. Drawn in part by the buzz surrounding the film, people packed the theaters and formed long lines for tickets. Within a week, it was appearing in chain-owned theaters along with “Spider-Man 2,” “The Notebook” and other big summer attractions."

2. Same here...
Opening night (Friday) the longest line I have ever seen at the biggest, nicest theater in Town.

Maybe they are talking about the Wednesday night opening?

4. I had the same reaction to that article!
We saw it at a multi-screen theater at a big mall on opening night and it was showing at half-a-dozen similar theaters all around Austin. It may be that it opened at "obscure, artsy theaters" in some parts of the country but that generalization is definitely wrong!

5. Same here - completely sold out in large multi-screen cineplex

You know, even if it's a political story, if you know anything about a story that is reported on TV news, you can be sure there will be several facts distorted to make the story "sell" better. I've run into this phenomenon several times with local newspaper "embellishing" people, disease, scene - whatever it takes to "sell" the story. It just seems SO unscrupulous at times.

6. Almost $100 million in total revenue generated so far...
...hard to do that if you open "in obscure artsy theaters".

7. I saw it at a 16 screen multiplex on opening weekend
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 11:30 PM by BattyDem
It's a very nice theater, but I wouldn't call it art. ;-)

Also played at the 10 screen multiplex and the 8 screen mulitplex in towns within an 8 mile radius. (opening weekend)

By the way, it's still playing at all three theaters ... and several more within a 15 mile radius! :7

on edit: Forgot to mention ... it was sold out at the theater I was at and friends/relatives who also saw it opening weekend, told me the other two theaters were sold out for the shows they were at!
