Anybody watch Katie Couric interview tonight
Edited on Fri Jul-23-04 11:35 PM by SuffragetteSal
She was talking with Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington regarding the upcoming movie remake of Manchurian Candidate.

There seemed to be some fires fueled between Meryl and Denzel regarding politics, after Meryl talked about being at the Kerry fundraiser (the one with the Whoopie controversary). Please don't tell me Denzel is not one of us?

1. Re: "Please don't tell me Denzel is not one of us?"
I would doubt that, but I really don't know.

2. I saw it and didn't understand Denzel's point
Meryl was adamant, however.

It was strange.

4. Meryl said something
about if Bush is going to quote Jesus or put Jesus on the side of his campaign bus, then he should know that Jesus had a chance to form armies but did not...and American voters should know that if they vote for Bush they are not voting for someone who is practicing christianity...

Denzel seemed to get a little miffed about her talking about what the Bible actually said etc. and he said something about a scripture in the Bible regarding Jesus going into the temple and taking the money...something like that...

Katie then said to Denzel, "so you prefer to keep your politics private"? in which he answered....no, not really.

5. yeah, Denzel repeated the bit about the moneychangers twice
That's what made so little sense. What relevance does that have, unless he is talking about Halliburton, et al, needing to be driven out of the "temple." Judging from his body language and reaction, though, I don't think that's what he was saying.

Also, Denzel seemed to take it as a personal affront that Meryl would one-up him on anything regarding the bible.

6. perhaps
and I say this relunctantly because I have always liked Denzel but maybe he was feeling a little understaged by such a strong and vocal actress as Meryl.

Whatever though...I definitely want to see the movie when it comes out!

7. Denzel is very religious

Denzel and Magic Johnson were HUGE supporters of West Angeles Church of God In Christ. The church is magnificent and has about 22,000 members.

Here is the link to the Church website:

Perhaps he was uncomfortable mixing politics with religion. IMO, his church leans toward "born again" and that may be more in line with issues related to the Religious Right.

Please do not hold me to this, it is just my impression.
