A prayer posted on the internet....
It almost seems like a chapel, it's so filled with love.

Father, I lift up to you our brother, President Bush, say amen!! I ask that You strengthen Him, that You protect Him and that You keep Your Hand upon Him. I ask that You give Him wisdom, that You give Him courage to do what is right, OUTLAW deviant "marriage, OUTLAW all abortion, OUTLAW stem cell "research" SAY AMEN! I ask that You draw Him deeper into You, that You pour out Your Holy Spirit upon Him, say amen! That You give Him a deeping hunger and thirst for Your Word. I ask that You illuminate His spiritual eyes by the power of Your Holy Spirit. I ask that You give Him grace. I ask that He would be a man worthy of the calling You have placed on His life as the One who will bring us to Your glory. I ask that You bless His marriage, that You make Him a servant as a husband and a father. . I ask that You fill Him with Your Holy Spirit, that You work in Him and through Him and by Him to accomplish Your will in the events of the Middle East You foretold, say amen! I ask that You pour out Your love in His heart, that you keep His eyes on +Jesus+. I ask if it be Your will, that You will allow Him to remain the President of this country for another 4 years. Keep Him from physical danger. Stifle the unpatriotic left who are bent on stopping Your plan. I ask that You use Him as a tool in Your Hand for this country and this world, I ask that You empower Him to speak Your name whenever he has the opportunity. Continue to use the US as a weapon in Your Hand for the protection of Israel. Grant Him the power to carry out His mission to liberate the world and bring us to You. I ask that You continue to make Him a man of prayer. I ask most of all, that You make Him a man who knows and loves You more and more each day. Thank You that You raised Him up for such a time as this. We are Rapture-ready, come Lord Jesus! We are Rapture-ready, come Lord Jesus! We are Rapture-ready, come Lord Jesus! Say amen, say amen!!!!

5. This is a joke, isn't it?
"Keep Him from physical danger."

Please Lord, keep him away from all bicycles, Segways, pretzels, alchoholic beverages, and anything else that might threaten him with physical harm. Come Lord Jesus! Say amen!!!

6. Is W the Second Coming?! "the One who will bring us to Your glory"?
Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 04:08 AM by Hekate
Good Lord (so to speak). Hekate responds with this prayer of her own:

"Good Lord, please, we beseech You, save us from the follies of Your more fanatic followers. Open their hearts to the compassion of Jesus, instill in them the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, cleanse their hearts of fear and hatred, remove from them the love of war.

"May all that we do foster those qualities in ourselves as well, so that in the good government of our country we will express our highest good as a people, and the soul of our nation:

"To raise up the fallen, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, open the minds of the ignorant, and free the slave; to behave justly and mercifully;

"And by so doing allow each individual to seek You in the way necessary to her or his own soul's path, acknowledging how little our minds can know Your great Soul/Mind, letting You be the judge and not we.

"Blessed be."

8. As a Christian...
I find this prayer repugnant. In the Bible, Jesus taught us how to pray. It's called "the Lord's Prayer" and it ain't nothing like this swill. For anyone to raise up a piece of work like * is tantamount to the worst idolatry. period. end of story.

(BTW, where on earth did you find that so-called prayer?)

9. Thanks for speaking up... and welcome to DU!
It's undoubtedly from the Dominionists; and you're quite right that this "prayer" is a far cry from the simplicity of the Lord's Prayer or the sweet dedication to the good of St. Francis of Assissi's "Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace..." I recently was asked to do two readings at a friend's memorial service, the 23rd Psalm and the Lord's Prayer, and while I was rehearsing the texts so I wouldn't stumble I spent some time re-reading the Sermon on the Mount. The author of the "prayer" we're discussing doesn't seem to be very well-acquainted with those words of Jesus, imo.

The wingnut branch of Christianity has hijacked the public conversation about religion, as if they are utterly right and theirs is the only point of view. Of course, they believe (and say) that the rest of us are going to fry in Hell for eternity for not believing as they do. Nice.

I know very well that they don't speak for all Christians, and some (oh heck, a lot) of what they say would have been called heresy and blasphemy not all that long ago. But somehow *theirs* is the voice most often loudly heard in the public arena, and their intolerance is downright scary because of the influence they've gained over the past 20 years and now have in the Bush administration.

Bill Moyers has talked about his own faith in the context of saying that they do not speak for him, and the journal Sojourner is a wonderful liberal-Christian voice. But man oh man do we need more Christians speaking up in the world like you just did.

Welcome to DU!

Hekate

11. A yahoo board
Which is inherently nutty, but I do think there is a not insignificant portion of "rapture" folk who really do hope this is "it".
