i watched the rally in colorado yesterday on cspan. and edwards made mention of the attack ads against kerry bush has ran and how they attack kerry's values. edwards said values is not something that you define in a political tv attack ad but rather how a person has lived their life. and then he went on to talk about kerry's life with emphasis on his service to the country in the military and especially in vietam.
i think it would be good for all democrats to respond in a similar way when they are asked about values. show people that it's aobut how one lives their life. ifyou look at bush's life there really isn't anything there to be proud of. this is why it's all about attacking the opponent. try to get the rest of the voters to see values in terms of how people have lived their lives throughout the years and not just through things like that sutpid ad where bush accuses kerry of not supporting the lacey peterson thing.
edwards work as a trial lawyer can also be presented to show it's about values by speaking about the actual cases rather than try to defend trial lawyers as a whole in a general way. when people actually see what edwards did in those cases and the people he defended there is NO way you can attack him that's why right wingers never go after him on his specific cases. at least not as much as just generalized attacks on all trial lawyers.

People keep saying we have to frame the debate. John Edwards is doing that, Kerry has done it for a while too with his bible quote about faith without works and that speech with "praying with your feet". Anyway, Kerry walked the walk, his entire life. As did John Edwards. I think that's a great way to fram the values debate too.
But I think on lawyers, we just need to go straight at it. We're talking about the right to legally protect ourselves against unscrupulous businesses, insurance companies and HMO's who cause as many problems for doctors as malpractice insurance does.
