Now that Malloy is (Yeah!!!) on AAR, who should be added next?
Edited on Sat Jul-24-04 10:51 PM by bumbler
The schedule is now re-runs in the following times (Eastern Time Zone)

Mon-Fri: 1:00AM - 6:00AM

Sat: 1:00AM - 10:00AM, 11:00AM-7:00PM
(Sat is filled for 10-11AM and 7PM-Midnight)

Sun: 12:00AM - 7:00PM, 10:00PM - 6:00AM
(Sun is filled 7-10PM)

Some who have been suggested for AAR here on DU include the following:

Guy James
TakeBackTheMedia
Peter Werbe
Thom Hartmann
Nate Clay
Mike Webb
Bernie Ward (added on edit)
Ed Schultz (added on edit)
Phil Donahue (added on edit)
Greg Palast (added on edit)
Bartcop (added on edit)
etc.

Other possibilities might include other types of shows like maybe:
People's Music
Other Audio productions (eg TerminalProducts, highlights from AAR talk shows, PNAC Lies compilations, maybe replays of selected non-AAR radio hosts if permissions are possible, ...)
Other...

Rather than trying to fill the whole schedule (I doubt AAR is ready to do this yet) just indicate what your first choices for program and time slot would be.

From 1-4am ET followed by RayTal 4-7am ET.

We need some West Coast representatives.

And ditch Laura Flanders, Mornings Sediton, and Unfiltered.

8. Yes, Bernie is great
I knew I was leaving out some good candidates.

What time would you recommend?

(And I'd rather not see "dump xxxx" recommendations, since I don't think there is much chance of any consensus on who is best/worst in the current schedule.)

28. Ed Schultz is Rush Limbaugh in a donkey suit
I listen to Ed Schultz on XM because they have elected, in their stupidity, to carry him. He is as strident and bombastic as Rush is. He uses the exact same tactics -- not listening to callers to find out what they're really saying, deciding what they're saying and responding to it, making them look stupid when they're trying to make a point, not letting them make their point which is sometimes a good one.

I can't stand his show and wish they'd make it go away. They had a woman subbing for him when he went on vacation. She was great.

33. Sounds like you're describing Randi....

I like them both myself, but figure XM will have Randi's full show eventually.

I didn't want to like Ed's show due to the pre-emption of Randi, but he's been entertaining and likely to appeal to a wider audience.

IMHO he's rather patient with his callers, maybe too much sometimes.

I listen to Big Ed and Randi via KPOJ. Most around here already know but I'm going to post this anyway...Big Ed comes on first immediately followed by Randi. For insomniacs(like me) Ed and Randi are also rebroadcast (KPOJ) in the wee hours of the morning.

Randi is on first and then big Eddie is on afterwards for a couple of hours. Ed get's a lot of crazy whack job callers often since I have been listening to him. Randi does too.

I like both shows, and don't see a whole lot of difference in either, they talk about the same stuff seems like.

18. My first two would be Guy James and TBTM on the weekends
I would give Guy 3-4-5 hours just before Laura Flanders (his show always seems too short), 2 or 3 or 4PM to 7PM on both Sat And Sunday.
In addition to being smart, savvy and sagacious. Guy seems to have a good insight into inner-party workings, and I'd like to see this as a focus.

TakeBackTheMedia does a regular show already http://web.takebackthemedia.com/geeklog/public_html/index.php?topic=tbtm-radio
Assuming they can use the weekend for production, I would like to see a couple hours before or after Flanders on Sunday, moving Guy James a bit if needed.

20. Too many choices
Guy James is great for presenting an "average guy" Democratic viewpoint. He welcomes opposing views and can support his viewpoint with verifiable facts. Republican Love is great for lightening the mood. I don't know if he could invest the time to do any more than a weekly show.

TBTM would be great for fills and special shows. They highlight the insanity of the political world with a humorous viewpoint. Not too sure if they could be regular contributors without good financial incentive.

Peter appears to be well informed and a good speaker. He also has the patience of Job when dealing with rw callers.

Thom Hartmann is a favorite for me. I think the biggest reason is the use of historical record to support his viewpoint. I had always been apolitical and forgot most that I had learned of America's history. Putting a historical reference to our current situation caused me to go back and look at the history of our country. That is something that could provide incentive to other disenfranchised citizens.

Nate I haven't really listened to, so no comment.

Mike Webb I'd consider him equal to Peter Werbe

Don't forget Bartcop, Peter B. Collins, and Meria Heller
If I had to pick a #1 it would be Ol' Bart

25. Look To Evanston, Sirius, Chicago - and Marty Kaplan
Evanston has an awesome show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. called THIS IS HELL, out of Northwestern University (you can hear archived shows at www.wnur.org) that would be PERFECT for the Saturday a.m. slot.

For Saturday and Sunday afternoon, here's a suggestion: Sirius has a gay/lesbian stream with a number of solid hosts, especially New York Observer columnist Michaelangelo Signorile, that might be able to transfer on a weekend gig. Either Signiorile or some combo on one of those slots would be terrific.

Another change-of-pace show is a Chicago-area show called SOUND OPINIONS, which is about rock-and-roll (record reviews, industry shows) but which is politically right up AAR's alley. It's hosted by the Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times record critics and streams on Tuesday nights on WXRT in Chicago.

Finally, Sunday morning is the PERFECT spot for "So What Else Is News?". It's much funnier, but the same kind of energy, as WEEKEND EDITION. Granted it doesn't have Will Shorts, but those reports in that slot is a good way to start the weekend.

Anyway, those are my opinions. Do with them what you will.

27. I think these are excellent options.
I added the paragraph about "other-than-talk" formats because I think that would be a good idea especially on weekends.

I like to think that DUers like myself who pleaded with AAR to add Mike Malloy had some impact, and as AAR becomes more solid I expect they will want to fill in some of those blanks. I will try to compile the suggestions here into a coherent letter and get it off to AAR, or if I can't manage that synthesis at least send the thread to them. (Unfortunately the edit time has passed, so I can't add these later suggestions into the first post.)

Too bad we're not talking about TV. I'd love to see your work on a weekly series on the ProleYV Network. May cause a sporadic drop in attendance at The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but the panties-in-a-twist reaction of the morning TV chatterbozes would be worth the trade off.

This guy is a liberal who has been on the radio in either San Francisco or New York for years. He does some entertaining stuff as well and has had comedians come on his show as well but I think he would be great as a political talkshow host. He could probably mix the two up pretty well.

Maria may not want to do a show for AAR, but if she would she would be hard hitting and would appeal to those who dislike both the Democratic and Republican Party. The only problem I think she would present is that she would be a target of the right wing. They would possibly try to use her to show that liberals and AAR hate America.
