CBS: Did the US Ignore Warnings? (UN HQ in Iraq)
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 05:34 PM by Cush
The US did receive a warning that an attack against a 'soft target' was coming.

the Governing Council had heard that there were several potential targets, but no one believed them

Doesn't make sense
The UN should be responsible to protect their facilities.

Why is it our fault?

They are the United Nations.

We are only one nation.

5. The fellow on ABC talking about underestimating
what it is going to take to rebuild Iraq wasn't talking specifically about the UN. He was talking about the whole operation.

6. You're kidding right?
The US told the UN that their security forces were not needed in Iraq last week. We ARE responsible for security in that country....that's our responsibility because we declared war, invaded, and now occupy that country.

This is a mess that many here predicted would occur....is it Iraqi nationalists or Al-Qaeda terrorists? Or a combination of both?

7. United?
they cannot send troops unless the security council passes a resolution and coutries offer troops. That hasn't happened.

8. Because we are THE occupying force in Iraq...
U.S. policy created the conditions that led to the bombing. Bush needs the U.N. to help him in Iraq, but he can't even protect them. BTW, the U.S. IS a part of the U.N., so we should be responsible for security, especially in a nation we invaded pretty much on our own and where we are the occupying force. The bombing is Bush's failure.

11. innocence and naivete
somehow are totally disarming to me, ElsewheresDaughter....i betcha they are to you too. Sometimes the posts maybe suggest ignorance or heartlessness when, they maybe just indicate thoughtless (youthful) over-reaction.... (?)
wouldn't wanna scare a new member off now, would we?
(this wise/kind old geezer trip kinda fits me, i daresay!:-))

4. CBS: Power Politics:
The US thought that using force to remove 'evil' would show the world that the US means business, but its achieved nothing. No democracy, just more violence & Anti-US sentiments

In Afghanistan, the Taliban and Al Qeada are launching new attacks.
