Conservative family members
Does anyone have advice on dealing with conservative family members? I was watching the Tour de France with my dad this morning and we got into one of our biggest arguments ever this morning after he kept making wisecracks about the French. It ended with him storming out of the house and me slamming some doors.

We've always known we disagree with each other politically, but it hasn't been a problem because I've been away at college for the last four years. I've had to move home for a few months until I get straight about where I'm going to grad school and I know it won't be pretty come November. We've tried the "don't discuss it" approach but that's hard given that I'm a political science major and heavily read the news, etc.

Any advice?

1. There's always internment camps
But seriously, other than "don't talk about it" I don't have a suggestion.

2. Ask him why he feels the need to be so judgmental.
Remind him of what Jesus said about being judgmental and then let it drop.

4. Sad that Dad can't moderate
his opinions in the name of family harmony, but it is his house. You either gotta move or suck it up.

7. Say things you don't even believe just to piss him off !

Or, try finding some obscure area of agreement and work from there (e.g., budget deficits).

Or, get him to express his cynicism about government in general and then lead him to the realization that Democrats at least "try" to pick a few plums from the tree for regular people whereas Pukes are only for their corporate masters and religious nuts.

Or, guide him to the realization that the conservative party has been taken over by extremists and crooks who betray traditional conservative values like fiscal responsibility, immigration, trade, freedom, and competence.

8. Yea my father is like that too
He's of the shoot em all variety, it depends on how fargone your dad is but if he's anything like mine, just let it go.

If you can't let it go, then try to show the fact that overall liberals want the same things as conservatives (we want criminals in jail too, we want terrorists to be killed or captured too!) and show how people like Kerry actually take steps to get these things done while the so called conservative bush tends to his golf game instead.

9. He's just an old rooster
who running around with his chest puffed out. They are only amusing when you feel well rested. They think Mano Mano is the "correct" way to deal with a subject and I just tell think they aren't an evolved as other men. They might have been something to have around in the tribe during the time of the Sabretooth but they are just pitiful now. So laugh at them and smile.
