Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will address Arab students at Al-Azhar University in Cairo next September 11th. He will stress Christianity's commonality with Islam and that we are all "children of Abraham"

As an American Anglican (Episcopalian), I take great pride in Archbishop Williams. He is the face of modern liberal Christianity and is an awesome leader.

Just a quick thread to remind folks that Christian doesn't always mean "fundamentalist"

2. We need more of this....

One of the most depressing things I've seen lately on DU, is the tendency for even our most progressive colleagues to "buy in" to the RW fundies defining of Christianity. Anger towards the "religious" right ends up being directed at all Christian sects, and sometimes against all religions, period.

3. Thank you.
As a liberal United Methodist I am disgusted with the way Jesus' gospel of agape love has been perverted into pagan judgementalism by the radical fudigelicals.

Thank God, a still inspired Real Christian has the courage to lead with such conviction.

4. I am not a religious person but people like the Archbishop give me hope
for the future. Everyone needs to quit hating and thinking that their religion is the only one. Most wars and killing is over, or has to do with, religion.

WHY CAN'T EVERYONE JUST GET ALONG???

Check it out!

"Cronos" posts: "The Anglicangay chorus is not a Christian church so who cares."

And "txradioguy" says: "Too bad the Brit Gov't won't do something...ANYTHING to make it extremely hard for the Archbishop to return to England.

And I wonder if the Church Of England can ex-communicate this "holy" man?"

Wow ... harsh!

6. Bigoted fundamentalists at work. Gotta love people who can put
qualifiers after each of the Ten Commandments (not).

9. Proud of my denomination
There are a few retro types in the Anglican/Episcopal communion, but on the whole, they are both loving and sensible.

10. Ordaining a gay bishop may turn out to be one of the best things
Episcopalians ever did. Our small, rural, southern church lost maybe 6 members out of 100, but the remaining members (with a very few exceptions) share a common religious outlook that is heavy on tolerance. I regret those who left, but they made their decisions and now they live with them.
