Whatever happened to "Al Gore TV Network?"
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 02:12 PM by Eric J in MN
In May, I put this in my blog:

http://www.moveleft.com/moveleft_essay_2004_05_06_al_gore_group_buys_tv_news_channel.asp
Al Gore has been talking about buying a tv network for a year, and on Tuesday Gore announced the deal went through. Gore's group bought the Newsworld International cable channel from Vivendi Universal Entertainment for $70 million.

Newsworld International currently broadcasts ˜international news produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.™ and reaches ˜about 14 million North American households," the AP reports. With Al Gore as chairman of the board, the station will broadcast its own news programs, though when hasn't been announced.
--------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone get Newsworld International?

Anything new on the channnel since the Al Gore Group bought it?

1. I don't get it.
I don't get Newsworld International, but I'm disappointed that it won't have a liberal bias (like Fox has a Conservative Bias). Oh well. I still wish I could pick it up.

4. at my blog, I have an Al Gore quote
Al Gore says, ‘This is not going to be a liberal network, a Democratic network or a political network.’

Instead, it will just be an ‘an independent voice’ aimed at 18-34 year olds, according to Gore.

8. What's the big deal?
We need "an independent voice" to counter the unbiased "fair and balanced" news from elsewhere.

13. I'm not bashing it. To the contrary, I'm eager for them
to start their new shows so I can judge it one way or the other.

3. If you compare NWI to Fox it seems liberal in comparison.
Actually, it does practice "fair and balanced" unbiased journalism as all the news channels should.

7. Not yet. It focuses more on Canadian and European news than
American, but I think it's because Al Gore hasn't taken over yet. Someone posted here that it would be some months before the takeover was complete, but I don't remember the exact date. Maybe they will see this and post it again.

6. I don't want a 'liberal' network
I'd rather have a network that presents REAL, non-biased news. With REAL, non-biased, tough reporting.

Then, I can interpret it however I want.

Right now, NWI is the closest thing to it that I get on cable (save for the news on BBC America and CBS' "60 Minutes"). The rest (CNN, MSNBC, etc.) is just a bunch of sizzle. Lots of personalities, too much Kobe/Scott Peterson/Michael Jackson and ridiculous car chases.

I don't need sizzle - I'd rather have the steak.

9. I hope it does well.
From my perspective, the news market is already pretty well saturated. I get 4 all news all the time stations on my cable....

10. CNN Headline News is basically reading AP stories, and

Fox News has a righwing bias, and so I think there is room for more serious investigative journalism.
