Protestors in Boston "clash" -- anti-choice & anti-war
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040725/ap_on_el_pr/cvn_protest

The two groups ran headlong into one another at an intersection, where demonstrators exchanged angry words with each other. Some of the anti-abortion marchers laid down in the street. They soon stood up at the request of the police and the two marches continued their separate ways following a few minutes of confusion.

1. And this

"Leonard Gendron of Boston, kneeling, becomes the focus of a scuffle on Boston Common Sunday, July 25, 2004. A fight broke out when Gendron, carrying a sign with an anti-gay rights message, interfered with an anti-war rally on the Common on the eve of the Democratic National Convention."

Geez. It's going to be an interesting week! I hope there's some coverage of what's going on inside the convention.

3. This brings up an interesting point (re: free speech zones)
Won't it be rather dangerous to confine all "protesters" into the same area in Boston? It never occured to me until this that it could be a very bad situation to have gay-rights and anti-gay protesters, pro-life and pro-choice protesters, anit-war protesters and pro-Bush supporters all hearded into the same pen.

4. You are right!
I hadn't thought of it before, but seriously, there could be mayhem at the very least.

19. Believe it or not, it has been done before
I attended protests at the presidential debates in Winston-Salem NC.
The college provided a soccer field completely away from view, broken up into numerous partitioned spaces for the various groups. (I used to have pic, it was as pitiful looking as it sounds)
Very few "took advantage" of this however and without a permit about 1000 of us marched a few miles and congregated at one of the gates. There was no violence thank goodness and it all turned out well.

8. I honestly think they don't give a rip
The powers that be in Boston have always considered all protestors to be pains in the butt. Usually, they're allowed to spread out on the Common. Penning them together in that cage is really going to be begging for trouble. I hardly think Menino gives a rip if they kill each other, though.

I'm just glad I'm not there any more, working in any of the ERs.

6. You do have a point
http://www.cpr4democracy.com/TheBostonCage1.cfm

"If something were to go awry while this enclosure is full of people, there would be no way to escape."

Could be a recipe for disaster.

12. It's gonna be a deathtrap
In that Free Speech cage if they put everyone inside together.

Just because people are protesting doen't mean they're on the same side. Freepers and anti-war lefties in a cage together???

18. Yeah, it is a recipe for disaster to have all these folks in the same
cage. Talk about gang violence! I would have to tell this lady that she is wrong and that she can't be a Catholic because she is violating a basic tenet of the religion "Judge not lest ye be judged"

11. I would think the Boston protests
are going to be a drop in the bucket compared to the RNC protests in NYC.

14. Right, but I'm afraid there's going to be a disaster in Boston
the way things are set up, and they'll "learn" from that in New York. That means big distraction at best (tragedy at worst) in Boston, and little or no focus on the protestors in New York with plenty on the RNC's convention...

16. The media planned to do this all along
Show alot of coverage of the protestors at the Dem Convention. But you can bet your bottom dollar, there will be NO coverage of the protestors at the PIG Convention. Even though it will be alot bigger. You watch.

22. Coverage of the leftist protestors in Boston is GOOD for Democrats
It shows the Dems to be the centrist or center-right party that they are, and shows the middle that there is a left to the left of the Dems.

15. I sure hope so!
Not much to protest at the DNC. Kerry's not the president (yet).

I hope the people in the NYC area do us proud next month.

are they ready to rummmmmmmmmble??

It's all so silly, really, Why not set up soapboxes (stages) whatever... and let them talk.. The confinement (or attempts to confine) is what fuels the anger..

silly...silly...silly
