It's not just building up the army and droppign bombs. They always say that stronger means that the people are doing better -- they talk about how military strength is a product of a strong, economically productive society.
Repubicans want the working class to think they have to sacrifice for society to be strong (Hitler did this too). Demcorats tell you that we're not strong collectively unless we're strong individually (FDR won four terms with this message, and by making it happen).
