I realized today that Dubya ketchup perfectly sums up the symbolism of....
this election.

We are voting between two different brands of ketchup.

We seem to have forgotten that as Americans we have a right to mustard, mayo, relish, soy-sauce and every other kind of condiment.

This is the state of American politics today.

2. Yeah

but in our country, right now, we only get ONE condiment on our
buns, and that one will be picked by a vote in very outdated
electoral college... so, which brand of ketchup do YOU want?

(and voting for mayo is STILL a vote for "W" ketchup).

3. Actually, 'Dubya Ketchup' is a great analogy for Bush's policies
For example:
a) They created 'Dubya Ketchup' because they assumed that Theresa Heinz-Kerry was somehow running Heinz. She's not.
b) They continue to hawk 'Dubya Ketchup' even though the Heinz corporation is a donor to Republicans, not Democrats, on balance.

So to summarize, in the face of flawed intelligence about who owned Heinz ketchup, the Republicans insist on continuing their obviously flawed, and self-harming, course of action. They can't admit they were wrong about Heinz Ketchup, so they continue to harm one of their own allies/corporate donors rather than admit they screwed up.

Sound familiar?

4. Two choices is the norm.
There has been no presidential election in which a third-party candidate did better than third place. Most of them didn't even get a single electoral vote, even well-known examples like Ross Perot.

And that's a good thing, in a way. It disciplines the mind to understand that the choice for President is a choice between this and that, not a choice of whatever the hell I want. We are a nation of almost 300 million people. A presidential candidate should have to be acceptable to a broad middle of the American electorate, even if those of us on the left are unimpressed by those voters' grasp of the facts and the issues. That's how democracy is supposed to work. It may slow progress, but progress that runs roughshod over the views of ordinary people (even when they are wrong views) doesn't work and doesn't last.

Anyone who looks at the Kerry vs. Bush contest and sees two different labels on the same product is either not looking very hard or is possessed of a wildly extreme viewpoint. For the former problem, I suggest looking at www.johnkerry.com.

5. And were you "disoriented" when you came up with this?
How about this one. then:

Kerry ketchup is made from tomatoes and water.

W ketchup is made from artificial tomato flavoring and Drano drain cleaner.
