Technical Question: Is Kerry GUARANTEED the nomination?
Lets say that some bad news came out on Kerry today. REAL BAD news. Like Kerry and Edwards turn out to be gay lovers, who went cross country on a murder spree. real bad stuff.

In other words, it becomes obvious to everyone that Kerry is unelectable. (remember this is a technical question about a hypothetical situation)

If that were to happen, is the party still required to nominate Kerry, or could they choose another candidate at this late date?

1. my understanding
is that he's not technically the nominee until he is awarded the most delegates and the counting of the delegates has not yet occurred so I guess the answer is no, he's not guaranteed the nomination

2. So the delegates
could simply vote another candidate if they wished?

7. sure
and actually I think it's not that uncommon that a couple do to send some sort of message or honor some home-state person or something (like a state may award 85 of its delegates to Kerry and 1 to Joe Schmoe or something) ... not positive about that, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it done before

6. No...
Up until the votes are cast, recorded, and accepted, "technically" anyone could be the candidate.

That said, Kerry is guaranteed the nomination unless he starts feeding small children to lions or something. Now, at the RNC, that kind of thing would pretty much guarantee Bush's re-nomination.

8. Gay lover murders, or Bush. Gay lover murders, or Bush...
Do I have a deadline on this decision?
