2. Not too bad
He's asking questions that allow Carter to give good aswers and is not interrupting at all.

10. He's letting him talk. Iterating that the charges are serious.
He isn't challenging Carter, just making sure the record is straight.

Jimmy doesn't take back a word or back down an inch. He KNOWS his subject cold.

3. Have You Seen "In Their Own Words"
Its a show Sir David Frost had on BBC that reshowed excerpts with various persons from years ago. The show of his interviews with Jimmy Carter and the most inspireing tape ever made if you ask me.

not a soundbite.

He's like a scholar compared to the "slang" from AWOL.

that we were not "misled." The facts will show that there was no justification, but that is not the same as being misled.

18. Agreed.
When Lehrer turned it over to him to sum up his criticism of Carter's speech, I swear I saw fear in his eyes. Coming face-to-face with a man of integrity, he shook in his boots. He didn't repeat the most vitriolic critism he had lobbed at Carter at a distance. He didn't raise the "bipartisan" bullshit or re-state, to Carter's face, his belief that Jimmy Carter was in no shape to lecture about foreign policy mistakes. That's because Jimmy was in the zone tonight, and Jimmy would have given him hell.

Instead, all Brooks could muster was ",...I, uh, uh, just want to.uh, know what the, uh, Democratic strategy is for Iraq..." (I'm paraphrasing). What a frickin' loser.

Brooks: what is the Dem strategy against Islamic terrorism?

C: I think the Dem strategy that hasn't been implemented by the admin is a unity of action among all countries throughout the world.

Shields up next to pound in the nail about Kerry (Hero) vs Shrub (AWOL)

I was just a kid when he was in office, but I remember my parents and grandparents liking him a lot. They always used to say he got a bum deal and kinda was in office at a bad time, economically.

24. High Interest Rates by the Fed Reserve did him in...
I lived through his term and liked his honesty... by he was back stabbed by Reagan and the CIA... Bush was the former head of the CIA and Carter had laid off several hundred of their forces to cut the budget... I think this was a critical mistake.. Bush then had his own private laid off secret service.... they worked to undermine the efforts to release the hostages.

Anyway... he has done wonders since with his honest and sincere effort to make the planet a better place..

That is my Humble Opinion....:-)

17. I thought it was really quite odd how Lehrer appeared to be taken aback
when Carter said that the *administration was planning on doing Iraq even before bush* took office. I was thinking, "Geeeeze Lehrer, get a clue!" Carter didn't back down (although I wish he had mentioned PNAC) and said, "Look it up, it's a FACT."

Carter was totally awesome! And you're right, he DID "everything BUT name PNAC" -- I guess I just wished he would have gone all the way.

I'm not complaining though, his speech and his post-speech interview were excellent, absolutely excellent!

20. Carter's best speech ever!
Oh, he was magnificent!
He just stood there, twinkling his grandfatherly smile and talking quietly in his down-home Georgia accent, and simply skewered and barbecued B*sh!
He talked about Kerry as the leader who volunteered for duty, as the man who showed up for duty. Between every positive sentence Carter spoke about Kerry, there was an unspoken, read-between-the lines statement about chickenhawk B*sh.
I wasn't terribly impressed with Carter when he was president, though I think he's a marvelous ex-president.
But this brilliant speech showed the steel behind the southern drawl, the courage to speak up in the face of evil.
Bravo, Jimmy Carter!

38. I just e-mailed the News Hour:
I watched your Democratic Convention coverage last night, and was appalled at David Brooks' performance. When given the opportunity to evaluate Jimmy Carter's speech, his comments were directed toward what was NOT, in his opinion, referred to in the speech, i.e., Islamic terrorism, rather than evaluating what was actually said by Carter. Then, when Jim Lehrer in the interview with Carter can Brooks a chance to reiterate his point, he deigned to do so.
Perhaps this is because he was flat wrong on substance. To quote from the NY Times transcript of Carter's speech:
"America stood proud, wounded but determined and united. A cowardly attack on innocent civilians brought us an unprecedented level of cooperation and understanding around the world. But in just 34 months we have watched with deep concern as all this good will has been squandered by a virtually unbroken series of mistakes and miscalculations. (Cheers, applause.) Unilateral acts and demands have isolated the United States from the very nations we need to join us in combating terrorism."
If the News hour deems it desirable to have commentators, can't you choose one with at least half of a brain, and a dash of integrity? Sadly, David Brooks meets neither of those criteria.
Sincerely, XXXXX
